Volt Gauge
Because of the crank bolt issue (I'm in the affected range) every so often I drive with the voltage displayed. I've watched it go from 14.5 (cruising) to 13.9 (stopped) and points in between. Is this normal?

What's the benefit from watching the voltage? I would think that you would have already heard alot going on under the hood, before the alternator stops doing its thing.

Yes. Unlike older cars where the regulator kept the voltage close to 14.2 volts all the time when running, the "smart" regulator in the C6 varies the voltage with load demand and battery condition.
This in normal. Remember the volt gage reads battery volts when the engine is off, and generator voltage when the engine is running (actually, it is whichever is the higher). So if the generator were putting out 14.0v and the generator suddenly stopped outputting, the volt gage would now read battery voltage (about 12.6 volts is fully charged). However, I would think that, as Hoonose stated, there would be other more overt indicatorsif the balancer failed.
