Why not run it by a Cheby dealer rather than worry about doing some damage to your car. You may not trust them but at least they would be liable for damages.

I would rather do it myself, believe me the chevy dealer can do way more damage just getting the car in the shop. not to mention the time and inconvience

The dealer I took mine too wanted to drill it out. I left and have not returned. So far it hasn't bothered me enough to take it in to another dealer.
Someone posted the other day that you remove one of the tail lights and reach in and snap the switch out. I haven't tried it yet but it sounds better than drilling on a +50K car.

It looks like a special fastner, may be a one time use item and it's the same on that is on the key release.
correct, 1700 miles never seen rain and it does not work, feels like it's stuck pressed in.
Mine sees the rain. I got about 7000 miles out of mine. I always used it. I'm waiting to see what develops on this thread before i take it to the dealer.
It's an Alum. pop rivet. Drills out real easy. Had my button replaced works great. I realize now when I wash the car to be careful with the hose pressure when I rinse above the tag
The problem is related to washing. Mine went out on Saturday after I washed it and started working again a couple of hours later. I'm not sure what washing has to do with it, but I doubt it's a coincidence.
I know how to get to it but what kind of fastner is it that holds it in? It's not torx so what is it?
I replaced one a while back, simply snaps in.From what I remember,no way of releasing the locking tabs due to inaccessability so if you break the buttom off of it you can fish it out of the hole.If you have the new one in hand you will see what I mean
Guess what started working today What junk on these $50k cars. I ordered a replacement for $15, the $15 beats taking it to the dealer twice, once to confirm / order and a second time to replace.

I was at the c5-c6 Bash in April and went to the GM owners clinic...while there they replaced the Button, from what I remember they took out the inside passenger tail light then reached in and squeesed the tangs on each side of the button (the factory guys said the button they put in was made sealed so their should not be another problem). I don't remember them drilling anything out. By the way this was a free fix while at the owners clinic, they also replaced the rear brake pads. My Black z51 had about 5200 miles on it at the time....hope this helps.
1. Remove the inner passenger side taillamp
2. Reach in and feel the switch, there are two plastic tabs that you need to push in, then the switch will come down. You will need to unplug it to get it out all the way. Make sure you keep track of the cable, it is not fun to try to find it.
3. Push the new switch in and reconnect it.
This is the way they were doing it at the clinic, I think it took him about 5 minutes per vehicle....
Personally I would do this operation myself, but if you do take it to a dealer make sure they do it the easy way, you don't want them taking your whole vehicle apart, drilling out rivets, prying on it, etc... Everything can be done with just the torx bit to remove the one screw for the rear headlamp
