The Big Honker Sucks!

Alright boy's and girl's, here is my assessment of the Callaway Honker. While performance is and will always be an issue, I was in search of that "sucking" sound, reminiscent of some of my muscle cars from the 60's and 70's. On a scale from 1-10 (10 being the best), I give the Honker CAI a 7, in the sound department. Going thru the gears, noticed in the 3 to 4 RPM range, I've got a nice sound...not quite like I remember from my muscle cars, but very nice, none the less. Theory: With or without mods, the Corvette is a performer, but with a nice exhaust, headers, and intake, I'm honning in on not only better performance, but that muscle car sound I miss from some of my earlier rides. I've given this a lot of thought, but from my seat, I think when comparing my vert to the cars of past, I have to remind myself of the following; 1) The overall construction and insulation on the new Corvettes is much better than my muscle cars of the past, thus cutting down on what you end up hearing in the cockpit,. In addition, I think over the years, I've probably exaggerated the sound of my previous cars...too some extent. None the less, I give the Callaway good marks in the "whomp-waw" sound department and I'm sure it will help overall performance/hp increase to as well.
Plus': I love the way it blends in with the engine/factory look, while truly giving me CAI.
Minus': Installation/removal of the plastic shroud is a PITA.
If I had it to do all over again, would I go with the Honker? ...no regrets, love the overall appearance, sound and performance increase.
Ran the car for about 60 miles...didn't throw any codes, everything was good-to-go from the DIC. Ran the car out just a little this morning, going to work with no traffic (5a.m)...breezed by 120 (short blast) with nice sound. I've got to be honest, for those strictly looking for the "sound" quality piece, I'll probably lose most of that when I install my headers, w/X-pipe, on my Corsa Sports. But none the less, she sounds strong!

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
what do you think you gained 5 -10 hp. how long did the install take?
Add to that the different firing order of the LS? engines and the aural sensation is quite different.I need a translation for half of what Kreuzen posted?

Seat of the pants won't tell.

The post is WORTHLESS without the pictures of the install!!!!!!

Also, here is a close-up of the installed C6 Honker Air Box >>
Here's the shroud after I cut the rectangular hole in it. I used my saber saw at the top of the picture, and then trimmed it up with some metal snips and filed the edges smooth. You could cut the whole thing out with metal snips or a hack saw. After cutting the opening, you clamp the filter frame to the shroud and drill through the 12 holes you previously drilled in the shroud - this time you drill through them and into the filter frame. Then you stick the 12 supplied pop rivets into the holes. That's what this picture shows. I'm getting ready to clinch the rivets with the pop-rivet tool next to the saber saw:
Here's the shroud with the filter frame riveted to the shroud and with the filter installed:
Here's a picture of the other side of the shroud and the intake ready to install in the car:
Here's the shroud back in the car. You can see that now the intake air is going to come from the grill and underneath the car instead of from the engine compartment. You can still look straight down through the filter frame and see the floor below. You can also see there will be a lot of air available to the intake and that it will be a nice smooth bend in the intake as it funnels it up to the bellows and into the TB:
Here's the filter in the frame:
And here's the Honker mounted to the filter frame and the bellows hooked back up to the TB. Ready for a test drive!!!:
I hope this might help anybody who will be getting a Honker (or any of the other intakes that require cutting the shroud). JT said he has sitting on the DR table - come on JT, have a couple of fingers of bourbon and get to it!!!
Anybody who is going to do it and this didn't answer your questions, give me a PM and I'll see if I can help.
Bob

I agree, the ***-o-meter is only accurate enough to detect changes > 10%
