A solid (or "live") axle is only a good thing for drag racing. In general, independent rear suspension (IRS) is considered superior to a solid axle. IRS does a much better job of cornering. All Corvettes have IRS and the have since C2. I'm not sure about C1.

I don't know where you got such and idea unless it was from the Mustang crowd (I believe that it still uses the old straight axle).
It isn't such a good thing for a performance car. It is old technology and hasn't been used on Corvette since 1962. Indpendent real wheel suspension is the prefered set up for modern cars. It produces a better ride while providing superior handling.

Corvette has not had a solid axle since 1962. In 1963 Corvette went to independent rear suspension. In general, independent suspenison allow for better ride and handling than a solid axle.

Better ride and handling but much more expensive and complex. Drag Racers don't need the ride and handling and prefer the strength and simplicity of a live axle. Probably 3/4 of the professional drag racers use the old Ford 9", Ford doesn't make them any more but two or three aftermarket companies do. Ford's 8.8" independent rear isn't even used on the fastest Mustangs, they went back to the 8.8" live axle for cost and strength.
