Default Coating a cat

I have these Random Tech. bolt in high flow cat's. I didn't get them for the HP (6-8?) I was going to Jet-hot coat 'em, and wanted the cooler under hood/interior temps, the added flow, and maybe some more sound.

Anyway, when I got 'em, I read the paperwork and it said that painting, plating, or coating them, would void the warranty,(I don't care) and could cause them to fail, by over heating. (aren't they suppose to get hot?)

I contacted Jet-Hot who said that it's B.S. and has never had any problems. I contacted three other coating companies which only one said not to coat.

I then remembered Jim Hall's post saying that there was a cat overtemp protection circuit that adds 20% more fuel when activated.(That would hurt my gas mileage.)

So my question to the Guru's is if I coat them, can they get too hot? If so, will it cause the overtemp circuit to add more gas? Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

im sorry i dont have an answer to your question but i was wondering how much of a sound difference is there between these high-flow cats and the stock ones? Any deeper of a sound or just slightly louder?

Also, where did you buy them and, if I may ask, how much did you pay for them?

With many of the newer vehicles, the cats already flow very well and there is little change in the exhaust tone by going to a high flow cat.

I have always been told you can not coat the cats due to the heat used during the coating process. I have had many sets of headers coated and even some of the pipes that come after them, but never had the cats coated.

Maybe they have a new process to coating the cats. Oh, I have used Jet Hot's ceramachrome on all my exhaust mods, so maybe there is a difference in the coating you choose.

This is just me, but if the manufacturer said not to coat them, I would not coat them. Not only could the coating process be harmful, but the additional insulation could damage them during operation. They are probably designed to shed a certain abount of heat through convection and you will be blocking that. I doubt that you will reduce cabin heat much, if any by coating them. If you're worried, try adding a heat shield.

I would trust the cat manuf before I would trust someone who you are paying to coat them. Who knows, if you overheat them, you may FUBAR the internals and INCREASE backpressure.

My thought exactly. Well, not exactly. My first thought was "with what?" Corn Flake crumbs, Oven Fry, seasoned flour??

Yeah, you're right. I am gonna coat my BB x-pipe and use the coated tunnel plate. With a black car in So.Cal, I'll have enough heat as it is.
