Man, I'm always seeing the same posts on here. Don't you guys remember these things, there was a post on here from someone that went to a GM Corvette Clinic that went through all these things, below is a quick summary of what I remember.

There are two manufacturers, Siemens and Denso. Siemens is the non nav that will play MP3. Initially they were both supposed to play MP3; however, the Denso unit didn't perform well enough in testing for it to be released that way. This is because the Denso unit was going to use software to decode the MP3 files while the Siemens unit uses hardware to decode them. For those that don't know, a hardware decoder is a separate component versus using the main processor plus software to decode the compressed audio. When you decode anything via hardware, it takes up little to 0 processor power. Software decoding takes up processor power and in the case of the Denso it brought the unit to near halt, the previous post said that the nav screen would become jumpy while MP3 files where being played for that reason.

The issue with FM static is that NAV radios will intermittantly get FM static, which will remain for the igntion cycle or until you switch to AM and then back to FM. This is the change that should be out or coming out soon, a software change. They didn't post anything (I remember) about this adding MP3 capability. As far as 2006 goes, if they added MP3 for Nav they may have added a hardware decoder, which means no 2005 vehicles can get it or they may have gotten better software, which means it is a possiblity.

Otto -- good explanation. On the last point about adding hardware, though, that seems like a huge risk since GM advertised all along that the 05 NAV would play mp3s, so to come back after the fact and say otherwise would be pretty suspect.
