Default Top Speed

Interesting, no limiter on the C6.
The GTO's have a 162 mph limiter.

I'm sure the issue is gearing on the A4, with the manual you have a greater selection of gears to stay at peak hp.

I would like to see what a Hypertech or Diablo tuner would do for top speed.

I have the Z51 MN6. And I do not live anywhere near Utah. I live in San Jose, Ca. I was taking a wicked 10800 mile journey to NF, Canada and back again. I enjoyed it but it will not happen again at least not that distance. The cool thing is I was able to get some really cool shots of the car in some really interesting locations!

I thought you had the mn6 /z51. To those of us saddled with a ''dog'' automatic that will only hit 170----that isn't too bad either---because 99% will never even see more than a foolish burst of 130/140. But I admire those with the stones to reach the peak.

I've gotten 184 on radar in both directions and had I felt a little more, well I hope I had a little more but it was an honest 184. Speedo was reading 186 in the HUD but the radar was calibrated with tuning forks and was dead on.

The temp. was 55. The salt was flooded, looked like a shallow lake so (like last time) I used the 3 mile long access road that dead ends at the raceway. I went up and down the road twice looking for debris, pot holes etc. Some people were there and I had to wait for them to leave. I started at the entrance to the road so I'd be heading toward the dead end ( no chance of surprises). I made two runs. The first run topped out at 168. The second run was 170. It took about a mile to get to 160 and another mile to reach 170. I kept the pedal on the floor but the HUD showed 170,169,170,169 etc.
Now to do some mods.
That's VERY depressing news.

170 is depressing? I admit I'd have been happier with 186 but the car is still new and an auto. Not many cars will do 170 and even fewer are comfortable at that speed.

170 is far from chopped liver. With a few more miles you may hit 175---but it really becomes a meaningless bragging right for 99% plus owners. The 2.73 05 and the 2.56 06 may hit closer to the 175/180 range but then again it becomes rediculous for most of us.

Living in Park City (7050' at my house), I can tell you that just driving down to SLC makes a HUGE difference in power and torque.

Yeah that altitude is killing your power. BUT it is also making the air less dense so its easier for the car to move through the air, i would think that would matter. Kind of like there are more homeruns in Colorado at the Rockies stadium. I had my c6 up to 176 in TX but ran out of road it was full of luggage and had 470 lbs of people in it. The z51 mn6 is VERY capable of 186.

It does matter, but not as much as the engine losing power matters. To take the lower atmospheric density to an extreme level to make a point, on the moon your car won't move, inspite of the fact that there is ZERO wind resistance. There is zero atmospheric pressure.

If you drove in Death Valley on a 50*F day during a high presure front, you'd have a very high atmospheric presure, but your engine's extra power and torque would over come the added reisitance, and the car would run faster.

You do see less wind "resistance" at higher elevation, but you lose more power than you "gain" in less wind resistance.

How can you say that if you haven't done it? My car does 170(indicated) under the conditions that I ran it that day. Could it go faster with different conditions, maybe, maybe slower. Until you've done it you don't know. There are so many posts on here about coulda, woulda, shoulda. Tell me you did it or you saw it. I'd find that easier to believe.

Something that hasn't been brought up to any extent in this discussion is rear-end ratio.

The MN Z51 is turning 5600 at 186 with a 3.42 rear-end. You said you were turning 4400 at 170, that would be 4840 at 187. I would think that if you used a higher rear-end gear, you would come a lot closer to 186. I don't have the figures but an engine turning 4400 is putting out a lot less horsepower than the same engine would at 5600. Claimed peak HP is at 6000.

My 06 Z51 A6 with the standard 2.56 rear-end would be turning 4825 at 186, if I were to put in a 3.15 rear-end I would be turning 5930 at 186. Very close to the 6000 peak horsepower RPM. With that gearing I would think the A6 would give the MN6 a run for its money given like conditions.
