The top layer of the serpentine belt started to shread at 100 miles and had to be replaced. Once completed, the car was making a slight whistling noise from under the hood. The dealer checked the pulley alignment and it was okay. They actually told me the noise was normal and they had a bulletin on the issue (I did not see the bulletin). They claimed the noise comes from the alternator which has some new feature that causes the noise. Has anyone heard of this? It almost sounds like a chain rattling under the hood from inside the car during idle. Even though the noise is not too loud, it is very noticeable.

I have not heard any noise from my alternator. That noise you describe is not normal. What did they say caused the belt to shred? It sounds like an alignment problem to me. Did they check the Crank bolt? That has caused some belts to shred as the pulley comes loose.
The only bulletin that I can recall about the belt shredding was the crank bolt issue. What are the last digits of your VIN? If they are under 11039 you might have a crank bolt problem. I would not drive it until you find out if it is the crank bolt or not.

Well, I called and spoke to the service manager. He told me the noise is normal and disappears when off idle (it actually disappears around 1200 RPM). There is no bulletin as claimed by the service writer. The service manager claims it is internally within the alternator. The alternator only charges when actually needed and that is what causes the noise. It just does not make sense to me. I think they don't really know what is causing the problem. They admittedly don't know what caused the top layer of the belt to start peeling away. They attributed it to a defective belt. I hope so!! The service manager told me to bring it back after I drive it a couple of hundred miles. I think they are just going to wait and see what breaks and then they'll know what to fix! I'm tempted to take it to another dealer. Can you guys take a listen to your car and see if there is a slight whistling sound coming from the engine compartment during idle? It does in fact sound to be coming from the area of the alternator. Oh yah, my VIN is 136134, so I don't think its the crank pulley problem. The service manager told me that problem was on another vehicle?? Thanks.....

As I stated in my earlier post, there is no noise from the alternator. Your dealer is winging it. There has to be a cause for the belt to shred. If he is unaware of the crank bolt issue and says it's another vehicle, I would find another, competent dealer who is familiar with Corvettes.
I have been hearing a slight noise in my 06 A6 (4000 miles). I have narrowed it down to a belt noise but I wasn't sure if it was noticable enough to take in to be checked out. It doesn't do it at all speeds and the noise is very slight. My wife's 05 Nissan Armada does the same thing but it is more noticeable. I'll get mine checked out when I have time and I will post the results. I am in no rush because it doesn't seem to be serious. Just to be clear, my noise is a whistle but it doesn't sound like a chain rattling.

I took the car to another dealer and they simply replaced the alternator and the noise is gone. Three Way Chevrolet in Bakersfield is the dealer that told me the noise was normal. Funny thing, I never received a customer survey, or a telephone call asking if Three Way Chevrolet's service was satisfactory. Hmmm?
