The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I'd like it to look better than 50/50 (50mph/50ft).

So imagine a welded in bar with a third support; that should give you a good idea of what you have got to deal with. For road racing and the cost of a vertible; it's probably better just to get a coupe or a z06.
However, there is nothing replacing the joy of roadster racing!

Depends on whether you want performance, or looks.

Oh that is a good one. It called marketing and salesmenship.
here is the bases of the SCCA Solo I rules: The roll bar must be at least a 4 point, with a digional tube between the main and single hoop. Plus a cross brase. and welded not bolted to the frame of the car. 1 7/8" outter dimeter tubing with .0120 wall thickness and made of mild steel.
Plus it must pass the broom stick rule which is a broom stick is placed on the roll bar across to the top of the windshield. There must be at least 2 inches above the helmet of the driver to the broom stick.
In short most SCCA or any racing roll bars most likely will not fit in a vert unless the driver is 5-8 or under.
Here is another challange. All most all road racing tracks require roll bars that meet the SCCA solo I or better for roll over protection to be use of open track days or HPDEs.

Street RacingWhen I was talking about the third support; that would actually be the fourth - the roll-over it self would be a u-shape with cross bars and a final bar attaching to the floor at the passengers right foot. And as you say 'WELDED' not 'BOLTED'
It get's complicated; but I'm still looking. On short order, if you want to take your vette to track days (racing or driver eduation events (HPDE)) then consider upgrading to Z06 if you are thinking about buying a vertible.

I goto / instruct / co promote many many HPDEs. We get ppl with verts all the time asking. SO far there has only been one vert ( that I know of) to pass the tech.
This guy did work with the SCCA and severl knowledgable ppl that do a lot of tech inspections at SCCA events. He started off with a comercially availbe roll bar from Wolfe. Which by itself would not pass tech. Then made addaptions, cross bar and Diagonal bar. had to notch parts of the tonal cover to get the rear down bars to fit. remove the waterfall as that back bar that supports the harness systems had to be straight so the water fall had to be removed.
Weld to the frame of the car.
But his top does go up and down and he is good to go for track days.
Once a real roll bar or cage goes in dont plan on removing it or selling your car.
so simple solution?? get one of each
Vert for top down cruzing and a coupe or ZO6 for the track. No really that is why I got a C5 coupe over a C5 ZO6. wanted some top off driving.
Now I am wrestling with the idea of a roll cage. Once that goes in forget street use. But safty on the track
