Default Poor Man's Intake Efficiency test....

Would one be able to determine the efficiency of his/her air intake by comparing his instant gas mileage. Is it valid to say that gas mileage would increase as efficiency increased.

coasting doesn't count, the car has to be in gear and cluch disengaged

DISengaged?

I think the change would be so small that it would be unnoticeable. Also too many other variables.

The instantaneous mileage is too "instant". You'd never get a consistent reading, even if you tried a hundred times with the same intake. You're only hope would be to measure the same stretch of road in the same direction at the same time using the "average" mileage for at least a couple of miles or so and then reset and start again.

The whole better gas milege thing for a more efficient intake is actually a farse. (not saying intakes won't make a tiny difference....) When you are at a steady speed the throttle blades are almost shut creating throttling losses. Any intake or even no intake at all makes an insignificant difference in efficiency when compared to the losses at the throttle body. It is kind of against what people would think....

Where intakes make a difference in efficiency is at wide open throttle when the blades are fully open.

What I speculate might actually work for an efficiency test is to use a vacuum guage and test what vacuum the engine creates at WOT with the stock intake and with the modified stock one. Theoretically, the more efficient intake would yield a slightly lower vacuum.

A perfect intake system would yield 0inhg vacuum or 1 atm in pressure, aka 0 psig

...just a thought....
