Not sure about most of your questions, but I would suggest that if you're looking at doing the whole assembly you might want to make sure you get a 2006 unit. I understand it's been beefed up somewhat. Of course you'll need to order the gears separately anyway.
Also, if I swap out the whole diff, can my stocker be sold and bolted up to a C6 automatic?

IF you have a 3.42 (manual ratio) the mount arms on the axle housing are slightly shorter than on the automatic version so no, it will not bolt into an automatic car.
Also there is a speedo pickup on the manual version but not the automatic. (this shouldnt matter though, just noting the difference)
This is for C6 - the C5 housings were interchangable. (other than the internal aluminum diff housing on the 2.56)

Good info, thanks. I'm thinking then that just doing a gear swap might make more sense. I don't want to buy the whole diff and not be able to sell my stocker.
