Having an aftermarket convertable top added to a C6 Z06, or to drop a 427ci and the extra suspension parts into a C6 vert....
the ladder would provide a spare LS2 engine to modify or sell to make up any difference. any thoughts?

There is a guy on here who took a std C6 and made it a hardtop vert, I think he said it was between 15-18K to do so...
You could do a maggie and many other things for less than 10K... Of course, you could have a 90K Z06 (figure 75K new, plus 15K top).
I don't mean to be a dork, but there is a reason the Z06s don't come as verts, and have the removable tops bolted down. Its kinda like trying to get the best of both worlds. If you want all that power then build a coupe or get the Z. I had hotrodded verts and body flex always got to the point where I needed to brace/cage the car.
But, to answer your question, unless you absolutely have to have a Z, mod the vert. It sounds like the money is a factor so you have to figure in the initial cost of the car. If you are going to mod, get a used vert. That could save you $30k from the git go.
Also, I think a Z06 vert would lose value as it would look like you took a vert and added the Z06 stuff. Just a few point to ponder. Good luck with whatever you do!
You will ruin the aluminum framed Z06 if you remove the top. It simply cannot stand the load with the Aluminum frame, if it is not properly triangulated.
Buy a nice 05' Convertible, send it to Lingenfelter (etc), and come out cheaper, and with a car that will be stronger, and likely faster!
The suspensions are basically the same. If you want to spend a few grand on springs/bars, help yourself, but I think you would be very happy with the Z51 parts.

get the z51 vert and put a 427 supercharged in that **** and you will have a vert that will smoke a z
