Default Removing valves

Besides the tricky-dick c-shaped tool, are there any back yard ways to get the valvesprings off a removed head? The only thing I can think of is to place the head on a bench and find/make something that fit in the bowl to prevent the valve from dropping when I apply pressure with my on-car spring compresor. There has got to be a better idea than this.

Not sure of any back yard ways but there is another tool that is U shaped with a crank on the top. The ends of the U slip into the valve spring end closest to the head. As you turn the crank it compresses the spring and allows you to get the keepers out. Not to expensive. I think I paid like $25 for mine.

An old trick is to put a socket over the retainer and hit it with a hammer and the keeper's pop out. Maybe the setup is different on the C6, I don't know.

...no offense meant, but if you are not aware of the tool to remove them, one has to wonder what you are trying to accomplish in the first place

The giant c-clamp is the correct way, but you can use the spring compressor with the hammer, as mentioned. Getting the keepers back in, however, can also be difficult.

However, I also agree with *89x2*

lol...I am quite aware of the correct tool to remove them I just don't have one here with me at the moment! I hate buying something I don't need/already have.

I have a very good set of springs/retainers w/ less than 3k miles on them in my stock heads that could go to somebody doing just a cam swap. I need to send in my bare heads as cores and realized at the last minute that the large c-clamp thing is up at my father's. I also realized that I had already removed the heads when I made the first realization, leaving me in my current pickle.
