Tips are a matter of preference. I talked with the Borla rep at Eckler's in October and expressed my concern about drone. He told me noot to install Borla's without the X-pipe.

I had the Borla Stingers on C5 Z06. They sound terrific but there is a little drone resonance at cruising. I just love it at idle, brut muscle car sound. I also had the X-pipe. Maybe that would absorb some the sound from what I heard from some of the threads. I have been comtemplating on my pipe selection for a couple of weeks now. I believe that I'm going with the Corsa's or B&B Route 66 for less noise in the interior compartment.
I agree that tips are appearance only and do not affect the sound. I have had the Borla Stinger/Sport on my C6 since May. I did not install the x-pipe because I was waiting for the LG Pro Longtube Headers to come in. I love the sound. There was/is definitely some drone between 1500 and 2000 rpm. I put the LG's on in late September. The drone has been reduced but is not gone. I rarely am cruising at below 2000 rpm. It only comes into play during acceleration (I do not notice it when slowing down, only during soft accelerations below 2000 RPM).
As a side note, I was in for service at City Chevrolet in Charlotte last week. The service tech and some of his associates were asking what the total exhasut package was (Borla was obvious, the name is on the tips). They said that they see lots of Vettes with aggressive ( okay, loud) exhaust packsges, but most sound like trucks. They thought the Borla/ LG Pro Longtube combo (LG headers are made by Borla) sounded really awesome.
A louder exhaust package will have some drone IMHO. If you like to be heard, learn to live with it. At cruise speeds even without the x-pipe there is no drone. During soft accelerations it is there but does not bother me. I know it is going away at 2000 rpm.
It's nearly impossible to get a loud exhaust without drone, although lots of people claim the Corsa's do it. I have Borla aggressive without the x-pipe, b/c I too thought of getting headers. I have a little drone only at 1600 rpms; pass through very quickly.
I had some problems with vibration from a rattle; it turned out the mounting bracket was hitting something. I turned it so the screw was facing the other way and the problem was solved.
Tips are definitely personal preference. Here's mine (the car on the right):
