I love it. Drive is just how you would would expect an automatic to function. S has very frim shifting with different shift points and downshifts as well. The paddles are great for the twisties leting you control the gear for the corner.
With all that said you give up around 20HP compared to the manual. But if you drive it daily or even often in a urban setting it is worth it.
I have a 72 4 speed for fun... but drive the C5 I have daily.. a lot.. and in CA the stop and go on the freeway parking lot...I have over 92,000 now on mine... looking to change... there are a lot of deals on the 05/C6's... but none have the 6 speed auto...

I have saw a number of threads in December about problems with the A6 hunting for proper gear, upshift/downshift at wrong time, to wrong gear. Has GM fixed this on later C6's?
We have only had our new car a few weeks, and I'm still trying to learn all of it's features, the 6-speed auto trans is one of them.
It sounds like when in the Sport Mode, that the transmission will shift by itself....until you use the Manual Paddle Shift Controls?
Every time that I have "played" with it, it will not shift by itself until I use the Paddle Control to shift it up (it does down-shift by itself).
So what is the secret? Do you place it in Sport, but don't touch the Paddle Control (don't downshift to 1st for example)? Then when you accelerate, it will shift by itself?

Any help understanding this will be appreciated.
In 'D' the paddles won't work, this you know already.
In 'S' mode the shifts will be firmer, more 'performance oriented' but still fully automatic so long as you don't touch the paddles. Touch either the + button on the front of the wheel or pull on the paddles behind the wheel at any point while in 'S' mode and the paddles become active and you HAVE TO hit the + button to upshift otherwise you will eventually hit the limiter. Downshifts upon slowing down will happen automatically or you have the option to do it yourself with the back paddles.
Also the shifts (up or down) will only take place if the motor/rpms are within a certain 'safety range' just as you exercise in a manual.

I have not had this problem. But sport mode does shift more often than drive but I'm not sure I would call it hunting.
Don't be afraid of an 05 A4/3.15 Either. No complexities of modes and learning. Recipe--place in drive, apply a touch of brake with your left foot, apply 1500-2000 rpm's with your right foot, watch the tree and mash the pedal on the last yellow and 1320 feet and 12.74 seconds later you will have shown all but the best of the best mn 6 guys how nice your rear end looks.
Whomever posted the "secret" to using the Sport Mode's two variations....Thanks. You would think that the owners manual would make it clearer, as to how to "do" it. I guess that they assume that the new owner would understand. Obviously, we all don't. They should have had you write this explanation for them. I'm ready to get back behind the wheel now and try it out.

Eleventy-bazillion threads on this already, but I *LOVE* my A6 auto. I haven't even used the paddle shift that often given the weather here in Mich, but when I do, the shifts are crisp and I like it. Although I really wish it were push to downshift, pull to upshift. I drive a lot in rush hour and the regular 'ol auto 6 speed is a phenomenal tranny. It's never searching for a gear and drives smooth as silk.
God bless you manual drivers - that's the way god probably intended a Vette to be, but I played in one the other day and I thought there was a lot of clutch effort and travel. That would kill me in the rush hour drive.

Reason: Spelling, of course.

Ok, so if one wants to go from 1st-4th from a launch in sport mode, no paddles how would you do that?
Have had my A6 for about 2 months. Overall I like it real well the shifts in the S mode get harder and wait longer the harder you drive it. Can,t wait to get it on a track!!! The paddles work just like some others have said. I am getting ready to order GHL,s for mine, bet it will sound great shifting it out. The one thing to wach for is the car seems to only start out in first using the paddles. In D or S it starts out in 2nd. Several threads have been posted about this. If you want to be shure you start in first--- when in S use paddle to go in first then put shifter in D then back to S. I know it sounds nuts but seems to be the way.
