Default transmission cooling question

Last year I ran my C6 at a road track for the first time. I have an A4. The tranny temp got up there a bit and I am interested in cooling it some this year. I thought for some reason the Z51 had some additional Trans cooling but appears I am mistaken?

any hints from anyone here what I might do or what trans cooler I might buy and from whom?

I don't think the Z51 has additional cooling for the A4 but it does for MN6, the standard cooler for the auto is through the radiator. There are a lot of after market trans coolers on the market. They are easy to install in front of the radiator. I put one on every automatic automobile I purchase and have never had a transmission failure. The number one cause of auto transmission failure is heat.

165 thermostate, and computer tune to turn on the fans at 185 degrees, and my tranny doesn't make it into 200 any more. Used to run at 220 to 240 when stock.

And yes there is a small fluid cooler on the back of the radiator for the Z51's autos, then it plugs into the radiator before going back to the tranny.

On my MN6 Z51 that cooler is for the power steering.

The oil and trans cooler of the Z51 are fine for normal spirited driving. But if your going to do a lot of track events( hope you do) you may wish to consider getting a bigger cooler.

In the mean time replace the trans fluid with synthtic ATF and the diff with synthtic gear oil. That will help quite a bit.

I have a manual switch on my C5 to turn on the trans cooler pump and a switch to turn on the oil cooler / accusump. A must for dedicated track / race cars.

you could always try 60/40 water /antifreeze with water wetter...i am in az and had in the past 8 years ran 75/25 water antifreeze with water wetter. you of course do see snow so you need to be careful if you do decide to play with different water antifreeze mixture.

Some good ideas thanks guys! It got up to ~ 235 or so - Iwould pull over and let it cool off ... I met a guy with an A4 who added a tranny cooler but I don't know what brand, where he got it, etc - so looking at that if anyone knows any more about this.

Where did you get your cooler / what brand and what brand synthetic ATF do you recommend?

No. My MN6 goes in the top of the radiator and out the bottom. The little cooler behind the radiator is for the power steering. I am talking about mine, I don't know how the auto works.

What pumps the oil with the factory MN6 cooler?

I haven't seen it but I read on the forum that there is an electric pump.

It is the GM PP T1 cooler for Manual trans. I use Mobil 1 ATF fluid in the MN6 trans and Mobil 1 gear oil in the diff. Smooths out the trans and diff vry nicely.

trans cooler has an electic pump in the right rear wheel well.

trans cooler left, AC condensor/ radiator center, oil cooler right

Accu-sump left front wheel well

DRM brake duct cooling extensions

any time additional cooling, engine, oil, trans, diff or brakes, that can be added it will help. No not a lower t-stat, as when you are driving that makes no difference.
Oh dont forget to blow out the radiators and ac condensor with a high pressure air hose to get the sand and dirt out. screens only keep grass and Mikky D cups out.

After one weekend on the track and this much dirt came out ( on floor)

Yes my C5 is a dedicated track HPDE car and I seldom drive it on the road. But any bit of additional cooling will help for street driving in hot climets.
