Back in the early '80s, I hand made solid Mahogany (SP?) dashes for two different RX-7's I had. They were really killer looking. Some day I'll have to dig up the pictures and scan them. It was a lot of work, but really turned out nice - especially on one I had with a dark red interior.
Custom made, would you have been able to find somebody to make them for you? At what cost? Can you imagine the cost of a piece of exotic wood big enough to carve the waterfall AND the console? I've purchased walnut for gunstocks where a piece for the stock 2' X 1' X 3" was $450.00 and the forend piece to match was another $250.00.
here is some pics of my car and the dash kit installed. http://www.digitalcorvettes.com/corv...6/ppuser/16549
i will look for the company
okay i found it http://www.exoticwooddash.com/flatdashs.asp
look around you can send them any piece you want to cover or get flat pieces made like i did. they have 2 carbon fiber...one real one fake. i got the real and it is really nice but is 2x the price but i would not do the fake and that is why i do not like the painted piece done in "carbon fibre" as it looks well not good! like i said i did not use all the pieces in the kit as i did not want over kill but the parts are perfect fit and have been on for a year no problem at all. just make sure yu get them where you want them befor eyou push them down as you will not be getting them bck off to move them.

I installed this package in Black CF and it looks super. Have received many compliments.
Now I waiting for someone to make a SS replacement for the silver plastic. At Carisle I saw a vendor with a silver CF replacement dash - too bling for me.
The color of that wood totally dominates the inside of that car and not in a good way. In my humble opion the interior should blend and not have anything stick out. Maybe if you had some high tech piece of gear in there you'd want to highlight that but not with wood.
Why not wood? well I think the vette is a high speed low drag car with nice tech features wood seems to harkin back to older times and unless you like the modern mixed with old school look it just doesn't match.
Carbon fiber might be more appropriate because it is more modern.
How much would a solid wood dash add to the weight of a car? My long range rifles have in the past had wood stocks and the wood made them pretty heavy and that is significantly less wood than an entire dash.
Veneer would just look cheesy and fake like something you got out of a Kmart auto parts area next to the pine tree air freshners. Sort of how those pictures look. Just cheesy and fake...
