Got bored today, and decided to make myself a Cold air intake. Went to Oreilly and Sutherlands, picked up the misc plumbing parts and worked on it. Took a few hours, but I think It will work quite nicely for the track. (not good for street use or wet weather..I made it specifically for the track). Here is the pic. I spent a total of about $65.
Getting the car dyno tuned tomorrow at MTI, then going to the track tomorrow night for an 11 sec. pass!!!
I took the car out for a spin, and in first gear on the floor, the car was worthless on the street....spinning no matter what speed i started at, (of course cold weather never hurts)But once I shifted to 2nd gear, wow...it really took off, AND when I got home, every peice of the intake was Ice cold!!!. And to put back to stock, it only takes 10 minutes (no cutting of the shroud either). Good bang for your buck IMHO. Track and dyno results tomorrow!!
Are you using an air cleaner in this set up? I don't see one.
I don't see one either. But he did say for track use only. However, I don't see this as any different than running a Vararam without a filter and I know a few people who made quarter mile passes like that. Vararam no filter.
I'll bet that sucker runs 11s though. He ran 12.2 with the stock set up. Ram air, cold air, and with the diameter of that pipe, plenty of air.
Where are you bringing that pipe out at?
What is the diameter of the pipe?

I didnt use a filter, however, I strapped a peice of tshirt material on the end of the pipe to keep dust and rocks etc out. It is only for the track, so it doesnt have to be the best filtration. The pipe is 3" (found some flexible hose at Oreilly, then coupled it to 3"PVC then curved it down to the left of the shroud (there is an open space down there), then cut a hole in the plastic right in front of it (behind the grill), where it gets 100% Fresh air. Based on what I felt on the street, I will be super surprised if I cant hit 11's, especially after the tune, which Im going to have them raise the rev limiter to 6800, change the fan settings, and whatever else they do. From what I have been told by MTI, they usually get about 10-12 RWHP from a tune alone. Any dyno guesses???
Previous was 349 RWHP, and 345 RWTQ, Since added Magnaflow Mufflers (not cat back system), DIY cold air, and will be tuned.
My guess is: 370 RWHP and 365 RWTQ.
Yep, very crude for now, prolly will paint it all black when it warms up, but too cold outside and dont want wet paint under the hood tomorrow!
(not designed to be pretty, designed to work!! )
Daren
I'm sure that you could find one of the K&N filters to fit the pipe.
You might be on to something. You say it only takes about 10 minutes to install it. A guy could install it at home with a filter, drive to the track, (in my case, I live 40-50 miles from one track and 60 miles from another, so it would give the car a chance to learn the new airflow), remove the filter and make his passes.
Then if he wanted, re install the stock set up for daily driving during the week.
You sure thats only 3" pipe? It looks larger than that.

My 1/4 Mile time guess is going to be 11.89@116.5
You won't see the effects/gains from the DIY cold air on the dyno as much as you will on the track of course and the mufflers will likely give little to nothing on the rollers either. 370/365 is a little on the high side but you will definitely dyno higher than before.
11.89 is also a little optimistic but the I'll bet the 116+ isn't too far off if you have some good air. If you get an 11 at all (I'm thinking more like a 12.0) it might be an 11.9x but I have been wrong before, that cold air tube could really make the difference.
Good luck and have fun.
The weather is supposed to have a -700 DA tomorrow night. I know the mufflers didnt do anything but give it sound (which is all i wanted anyway), but the cold air intake made a HUGE difference on the street, plus they are going to tune it. (raising the rev limiter should get me at least a tenth due to 300 more rpm for 3 gears)
Yes, positive about 3" pipe. It took a few hours to engineer and put together the parts, but now that its done, it probably would take 10-15 minutes to install or put back to stock (as long as its not wet at all tomorrow, im just gonna drive it to the track as is) Then put back to stock when i get home.
In hindsight I wish I could have found some of the turbo tubing that fit perfectly and would bend a little more, and If I had some more time, I could probably make it pretty, but ahhh...its just for the track anyway!!! You could probably make a pretty nice looking one for about $125.

I might be going tomorrow night (well tonight actually LOL) as well, trying a different track than last week to see if I can improve any with a different launch.
Another great wefare mod! Paint it black, buy a universal washable filter and leave it on for good. The washable filter probably will flow as much air as your Tshirt.
Now if you would install a port fron the AC into that puppy, you'd get another 20 rhwp
I was think along the lines of a leaf blower with a 20 shot of Nitrous. good for maybe 140 rwhp. maybe you could tap into the fuel system to keep the leaf blower fueled.
