Default Thermostat Problem Please help

Never had a problem in 40 years with these things. Just installed an SLP 160 thermostat (new). I could only get enough coolant in to fill the reservoir. Temp went to 235 so I shut it down. It won't draw the coolant in. I forgot to check the thermotat in boiling water. Unless someone knows how to get the air out or whatever my problem is, I'll pull the thermostat and check it. Thank you for your help.

The book says the same as what you are doing. Basicly warm up the engine enough to open the T-stat, and add coolant as needed to the expansion tank.

I believe it would only draw coolant in once the car starts to cool. That's how it was on the old cars anyway. Not sure if you disassembled anything yet, but maybe just leave the car alone and let it fully cool down now and see if the level drops in the expansion tank. If so, refill the expansion tank, restart, let the car get hot and repeat process until the expansion tank no longer looses any fluid. I could be wrong about this... but it does make some kind of sense. i'm surprised there is no bleed screw anywhere.

I'm still waiting for the `06 shop manual! Taking forever!

May require 3 cold / hot heat cycles before air is purged out.

I called a friend, Vette mechanic, and was advised that you have to "bleed the air out of the engine"! There is an aluminum tube going into the heads near the throttle body.
Disconnect it and you can then fill it until coolant comes out from the head. I did several C5's and C4's. Never ran into this before. These things may be getting too complicated for this old muscle car guy to mess with! FYI, I did let it cool and try again a couple of times. No go!
Oh well, another 10 minute job that took several hours! My wife is starting to frown when I head toward this car with a wrench!

same thing happen to me when i swap out the stat....don't worry about it....here is what you have to do.....hold the rpm at 2000 until the coolant level start to drop then add as much as you need....you will need almost 2 gals to fill it back out....i know it is scary seeing it at 235 degrees.....but when you see 180 or so that is when the stat should start to open just keep it at 2000 rpm....try it and you will see the coolant level drop....you might have to fill it back up a little (not even a pint) after a couple heat cycles, and that is it.

The service manual page 6-320 states basically the same thing. 235 degrees is not a problem. I wouldn't worry until it is around 250 but it wont get that high.
