It is a low hum thaat happens at low rpm with some cat back systems. It is not the sound as much as the harmonic vibrations that bothers people. It has made some sell their cat back systems at a loss.
It is more of a resonating sound within the car and annoys most people. My 99 has a drone at a certain RPM with the Borla Stingers...I will make sure I don't have it when choosing a cat-back for my C6.
Corsa exhausts are the only ones that have no drone as reported by a whole bunch of people in their opinion. I have a corsa pace car exhaust on my 99 C-5 that has no drone. After reading numerous reports on here & elsewhere about problems with drone on other brands I wouldn't even consider anything but Corsa when I change the exhaust on my C-6 which I will be doing soon. Some people complain that although the Corsa doesn't have any drone It has more of an exotic or "euro" sound rather than a "musclecar" sound. I really like the Corsa sound & for a daily driver that I use my C-6 for the last thing I want is an exhaust that I have to "workaround" the infamous drone supposedly in the 1500 to 2000 rpm range by changing gears. Ridiculous. Just my humble opinion.
It's something that just started recently and I can't explain it. At idle it sounds almost like some ricer has his bass turned up loud nearby. Well, maybe not that annoying and not that vibrating but still noticeable and a little annoying. I just hope it doesn't get worse.
If you let your grandmother drive it you will hear the drone. If you drive the car the way it was meant to be driven drone will not be an issue. If the 1st to 4th happens alot for you then do not get the Borlas. I have the Borla Stingers and I love the sound.
"Drone" is the annoying sound from your exhaust that typically occurs when you're cruising along on the highway at 1800-2000 rpm & the exhaust note should be relatively quiet (versus when you're accelerating or decelerating). Tends to be very annoying on road trips...like the sound of a dentist's drill being transmitted thru your skull Not fun on a long trip. I just put Corsa Sports on my Z51/MN6 after much research on the Forum to find a good solution to this potential problem & I must say, the Sports are absolutely as advertised. Great sound on acceleration...very mellow on cruise...and no drone!
B&B Bullets with PRT.
Awesome Sound, A little drone but disapears when you step on the gas which I do alot.
Sounds like a American Muscle Car should sound like...
So far, any catback that measurably reduces back pressure ends up with some drone at some rpm. Corsa Touring has little or no drone, but isn't much different than a stock system in sound or power - IMHO.

Don't buy B&B if your worried about drone......only buy them if you want the best sound going Mine sounds like a street driven Pro-Stocker and thats just the way I want it.....
