Discovered bug in Driver Information Center
I discovered last night a sequence of operations that causes the OIL LIFE REMAINING estimate in the DIC to reset improperly.
1. Press and release TRIP repeatedly until the ELAPSED TIMER page is displayed.
2. Hold down RESET for three seconds to reset the stopwatch to zero. Release RESET.
3. Press and release TRIP until the ENGINE OIL LIFE page is displayed.
4. The current engine oil life percentage will be displayed. Then, a few seconds later, it will reset to 99%, accompanied by a single beep -- without the operator pressing RESET.
Anybody who wants to try reproducing this bug should probably wait until his or her next oil change.

I tried this just now and report the same unexepected resetting of the oil life. My elapsed timer was already on zero and I held the button down - the display went through a series of numbers real fast and stopped at zero. I switched to the oil life screen, which was reading 74%. Within a couple seconds the screen updated to 100%.
It's almost like there is a keyboard buffer that applies residual stored reset commands toward the oil life screen. Odd but apparrently a real 'bug' and not just something on torquetube's car.

I discovered the same defect on the second day I owned the car (Feb 2005). I've seen it reported here before but have never seen a fix or work-around. Would be nice to know if it was fixed on the 2006's.

On a semi related note, when I changed my oil last (which was also the first oil change actually) I had forgotten to reset the oil life monitor before driving the car, luckily I remembered within the first 4 miles of driving so I did it then but it only came up as 99% oil life remaining, it that normal or should it have said 100% ?

My oil life indicator had reset itself a while ago, fortunately I knew what the percentage was before the reset. But until reading this thread I couldn't figure out why it had happened.
Today the dealer did an oil change, before the tech started working on the car I had the service writer go through the elapsed timer reset, then scroll down to oil life remaining. Sure enough, after a few seconds it went up to 99%. The look on his face was priceless. Both he and the tech did a computer search to see if there was any info from GM about this, but they found nothing.
I'm sure there is someone at GM who would understand the problem and the seriousness to both GM and the customers- damaged engines + warranty claims in the future because of insufficient oil changes. There are also about 50,000 people who would yawn and throw the message in the trash. Does anyone know how to get this information to the right person?

Melting Slicks
you could always use the old fashioned way - check the odomoeter.
out of curiosity, I do look at the oil life %, but personally, I just change the oil every year or 6k miles...

I use the indicator, conservatively. I change when it gets down to 50%, on my C5 that would come as quickly as 3,500 miles of city driving during winter but as high as 7,500 miles of highway driving during summer.

The other problem with the DIC is that the trip meter will reset itself...usually between 1500 and 2000 miles. So if you're taking a long trip and want to know the mileage, be sure to jot down your starting ODO reading or you'll be disappointed.
