Default Another thermostat question

OK, I've followed the other thread on thermostats, but I still have a couple questions.
1. What temp is the stock thermostat?
2. What are the available choices for other temp thermostats?
3. Do they all need their own new housings installed too?
4. Sources, please

1. 86 degrees c stamped on the stock stat, which is 186 degrees F
2. 170 and 160....you will be paying alot more for the 170 vs 160
3. 160 reuse all stock parts...i believe 170 comes with the housing or some sort that is way it is much more expensive.

The Service Manual says to use a new housing for a thermostat change. $32.18 list price with a new stock thermostat and gasket(the only way the Dealer sells it). I bought the 160° thermostat from TBYRNE for $25.99 delivered. Add in the cost of 2 gallons of DexCool @ $11.99 ea., the time involved to drain, remove the old housing and stat, install the new housing and stat and re-fill the system and you are looking at $82.15 parts + tax and a couple of hours labor to do it right.

Don't forget that to fully realise the benefit of the 160° stat you'll have to re-program the fan speed and on/off temps.

Why do you have to replace the housing?

It's probably a Chevy CYA in case the original thermo housing warped. Saves "free" re-installations if it leaks. The housing to the water pump has no sealer or gasket, the seal depends on the round internal "O" ring type gasket. The housing is very thin cast aluminum that is heavily machined, almost a polished finish
