He just through his hands in the air as I recall, to cars around him, to show that he could do nothing. But the 87 was pretty fast, I borrowed it for a week when he went on vacation to the mountains. I also raced the LX's in my Dad's 1987 (I think) Charger back in that time era, and they used to barely beat me. My dad also had a GLHS Shelby (a friggin Omni four door box) I think that was the ultimate sleeper except for some of the badges it had. I never really cared about Corvettes growing up and that Chevelle I sold about 15 years ago was one of my biggest regrets, but when I read about the Z06, I became an instant Corvette obsessed fan. And yet settled, well you know, decided on a C6 05 auto vert instead and added the Procharger and Kooks and am fully on board with my decision now. It is amazing that this car would blow away my Chevelle which I think with the mods I had would have probably done 12.86 in the 1/4 according to comparisons I used to read in Super Chevy Mag. Plus that bad boy was loud, ate gas, but it was super easy to work on which I miss. Hell I am scared to change the oil on the Vette it is so low. Any way, this is the best thread I have read since being on the Forum. To think one poster said "IBTL" early on.
To change the oil on the C-6 you will find it to be very easy if you use the Rhino Ramps and the standard ones work just fine.
The great thing about those Chevelle big block 454's is that there is alot of space in the hood to access the engine unlike the 454 and some 427 Corvettes where the engine is just packed in very difficult to get to spark plugs. Now on the C-6 with all of the computers, sensors, relays and electronics in it if there is anything wrong or needs repair it's one of those cars you have to send in for repair unlike your hot rod mod chevelle.
What other cars have taken your Chevelle?
Did your Chevelle have all drum brakes or front disc rear drum?
Those cars back in those days couldn't handle or stop worth a dime and were very heavy that didn't help braking, or handling.
Now if I had to get one of those big musclecars it would definitely be a 68 Charger like the one in bullit. I'm sure there's lots of room under that hood even if it has the 440 in it.

Ls Won, sorry my post maybe somewhat incoherent, but nothing ever beat my Chevelle, although I did not race it that much at all. I lost to the LX in my dad's 1987 Carroll Shelby Dodge Charger. I have to sleep now.

You really did loose to the shelby Dodge Charger that only has a 2.2 motor Plymouth Turismo was the other counterpart to the Charger of that time if I remember right. Don't forget the Buick Grand National and Buick GNX.

I only ask because back then I test drove a Lx 5.0 just like the one above with no options and it was a screamer This was in the hills of San Francisco
Mine was a '91 actually and had the 3.27 gears. And though I've almost ALWAYS ordered the lightest/fastest cars that I could, back then it was tough (or at least not cost effective enough) to get A/C without getting roped into some other stuff that I didn't necessarily want/need so it wasn't a total stripper (had power windows/locks/mirrors/cruise etc.). But being a notchback (as you obviously know, a trunk as opposed to hatchback) it was still relatively light at roughly 3090 pounds (without me or it's jack/spare in it) though.

Yes plus being a notchback it should be more rigid than the hatchback. Good thing about hatchback is you can get more storage space but you also get that real bad blind spot. On the notchback I didn't see any blind spots. The more glass from the hatch adds to the weight.
The auto LX I test drove did have the optional 3.27 axle which was only available with automatic trans. The stick was 3.08 which I ordered with my 5spd trans. I didn't want those 2.73 gears that were standard.
The dealership changed my rear to 3.55 under a warranty repair.
Too bad at the time I test drove that LX 5.0 you could not get the GT seats in the LX. This car had the cheapy seats I didn't care for.

Yeah, the hatch had the 5.0 "sport package" so the GT seats were standard with the bolsters. My rear however was 2.73 until I swapped in 3.55 about six months later. Than I fiured out you could "hold the gears" and blew 3 trannys. Ahh, the transgressions of youth.

After that I found a used ball drive paxton had it rebuilt by Car and Custom in North Jersey, bet you guys don't remeber them. And from there, just became a pet project bouncing to Larocca's for some tuning and new four wheel disk brake conversion. After last year, when 17 year old bimbo on cell phone rapped into my front after disregarding stop sign while being chased by her boyfriend, I vowed that I would restore the car, repaint her, which I did with PPG and after parting with ungodly sums of money, I will leave her in the garage starting her weekly and leaving her off the streets.

so the transition from 2.73 to 3.55 was definitely noticeable?
Did you feel a big difference in accelertation but did your top end speed go down?
did it affect your gas mileage alot?

The Vette just feels so much lighter, quicker, and more responsive in everyday driving.

My Cobra (492rwhp 11.84@120.57) always felt HEAVY.
My C6 auto Vert just loves to fly away from lights with just a hint of pedal pressure. Like my wife loves to say "EFFORTLESS ACCELERATION"

There is a different type of joy in driving a car that feels 1000#s lighter than a more powerful car that is much heavier.

Aldo worth noting, my stock C6 auto runs 12.57@110.67 with a 1.92 60with no driving skill.

My older 03 Cobra with 445rwhp ran 12.22@116 with a 1.93 60' on DRs on a prepped track. On the street I would take my chances in my C6, it is just too east to be consistent. Not that I would ever condone street racing, but just hypothetically speaking.

Also, once a C6 is moving (and I mean top end type speeds), aerodynamics and design go a long way towards top end acceleration.

Aside form the weak exhaust note, I hate to admit it, but the C6 Vette is the BEST desingned car I ahve ever driven.

Sidenote - My 350Z is still at GREAT CAR also, with an extra 100 horsepower = 400 like the C6 it would be just as GREAT a car.

Yes I had meant to mention that, it was actually a bigger reason for me getting the notchback than the 60+ pound weight savings was.

True, '91 was the very first year that the GT seats were available (standard) in the LX 5.0s, mine were the grey cloth. It was also the first (of only two) year of the emerald green paint on the regular production (it was a special edition color for the 1990 '7 UP' convertibles) Mustangs, I loved having that color.

Tom -

Only two toys left, the C6 and the 350Z.

Wife has a Navigator, that stays outside as I only have a 2&1/2 car garage.

Ah yes....... a paxton supercharger (you change the oil with a turkey baster) with a FMU and 18 pound injectors. I had one of the early units (purchased it from Performance Centers of America, 1990/91). Belt tension was a bear and the blower bracket made several trips to California. If you did not remove the vacum line to the adjustable fuel regulator and turn the pressure all the way up..... cherry red headers even with a very large fuel pump in the tank and the FMU. In the early days the addition of 24 pounders made it somewhat better but most of the time I was running either too lean or too fat. Larocca, Dwayne & Mike Sodano still had not figured out the correct tune or did not want to share their secrets just yet

Then:
I got a vortech A trim & installed the smaller pulley, GT 40 kit. The stock AOD became toast and I replaced it with a unit from GER with a converter, lower first gear ratio and a set of 3:73s. One thing lead to another and before I knew it........... too much HP and the 302 became a boat anchor. A new 306 replaced the old motor, bigger injectors, more mods and now my daily driver was almost not drivable on the street unless I had the drag radials on.

The paxton is still siting somewhere in my attic I had a 5.0 liter white 89 LX with the stock 10 hole wheels a real sleeper After buying the Vette the toy supervisor infomed me that I had too many cars and I just sold my little white sleeper

Ahh the old 5.0 days ....Lee Rutter, Stormin' Norman, Gene Deputy, Nitrous Pete, Racin' Jason ...those were fun times.
I still have a picture of my '91 parked next to Stormin' Norman's red 'vert (with Steve Grebeck driving) in the staging lanes at the summer Ford event at E-town back in the early '90s.

I have lost more money on 5.0 Mustangs than I care to remember.

I had a 1988 Mustang GT I bought used for $3200.
By the time I was done I had spent $18000 (TOTAL) on Blower, heads, cam, intake, etc... and ran 12.3@116.8 on a 2.0 60'.
Car started having problems and I sold it for $2000

My recent 92 Mustang LX VERT I bought for $9500 and it was a solid high 11 second car with the Powerdyne blower.
BUT NOoooooooo, I had to run 10s, so I spent a TOTAL of $20,000 and it ran a 11.22@120.56 (1.81 60') and blew a head gasket, cracked 3 rockers, and I sold it for $5500.
It would ave run 10s, it ran a 1.66 60' on the 1st pass, but lost traction on the 1-2 shift on that one.

For the money, a nice 5.0 with full exhaust, 3.73 rear, 5 speed, and the basic mods will be a solid 13 second car and provide lots of smiles per mile and be reliable for 200,000+ miles.

O yea, I forgot to mention my Blown and intercooled 2000 Mustang GT Vert with 385rwhp SAE, $30K TOTAL, sold for $15,000.

I sure love my my Mustangs, I could have bought a NEW Z06 with all the money I have lost on all of them.
