Default removing mufflers

Has anyone replaced their mufflers on a 2006 Z51 C6? I'm curious to know if you had to loosen and pull the rear stabilizer bar down to remove the mufflers.

No, not with the stock system. It disconnects immediately forward of the muffler can itself, plus there is sufficent slack in the system to enable you to move things fore and aft so that you can add/remove components without dropping any part of the rear suspension.

Now, with headers, hi-flo cats, and Corsas that's a different matter altogether. . .

Thanks, Ben.
I'm still waiting for my GHLs to be delivered. Sure hope they come today, so my mechanic can put it all in. Otherwise, maybe tomorrow. But if they don't come in time, I don't know if I'll have my wife have UPS overnight them to Bowling Green, and I'll have them put on there before my Dyno tune.

Not sure where GentleBen gets his info but the instructions for the Corsa installation say drop the bar to get the stock mufflers and pipes out. Just takes removal of two bolts and two nuts. The mufflers are welded to the pipes unless the 06 is different from the 05. You also have to drop the "H" pipe to get them out.

That's what the video at the Ecklers website showed. But my rear sway bar looks lower somehow, so I thought it was different. Also, someone said way back that they didn't have to drop the bar. So I wasn't sure.

Did mine yesterday. Drop the H-pipe and undo the rear stabilizer to allow it to fold down. I set the rear on jack stands and lifted one side on the front. Easy one person job.

You've got to drop the rear stabilizer bar. No question.

Here's a tip I've posted before:

Don't try to pull the mufflers out of the rubber hangers in the rear of the car. Each hanger, there are four total, is held in place by one bolt - remove the bolt and the muffler will drop easily. The hangers are easy to remove from the mufflers once the assemblies are on the ground, a PITA while on the car. When remounting the mufflers bolt the hangers back in first, and shoot some soapy water into the hole in the rubber mount the rods on the muffler fit into. The mufflers will slide right in.

Good tip here on the hangers - and I dropped the bar on mine!

And another tip... have four M10, 1.5 thread 70+MM threaded studs on hand, like part number 98867A360 availble from www.mcmaster.com 90MM studs will also work, as will bolts. You'll also need four M10 matching nuts, and you reuse the combo washer/nuts from the stock bolts. As posted in another thread, the stock studs holding the h-pipe to the catalytic converter pipe assembly are crap, and are not replaceable from GM parts depts.

Odd, did you cut the stock pipes? I used a lift too, but it didn't look like the mufflers would clear without lowering the sway bar, but I didn't really try it. Not that lowering the sway bar is a big deal... four bolts, with a back-up wrench required on the top one. I can't remember the torque values for re-installation, and they are different for the top and bottom fasteners on each side.

I did the Corsa Sports with X-pipe couple of weeks ago. Was fortunate to have access to a 4-post lift with drive-on ramps in a neighbor's home garage. Followed the Corsa instructions to drop the rear stabilizer bar.....just a couple of nuts & bolts on each side...maybe 10 minutes work. Sure didn't look like the stock mufflers would come out easily without doing that! Mine's an '05/MN6/Z51, but I can't imagine there would be any difference with on '06. And no problems with the cat flange studs. Just squirted some WD-40 beforehand & then used a dab of hi-heat grease (Permatex) on all the fitting before tightening.

Yeah, me too, but when a friend did his car in my garage (a lift makes you popular...) he bent his studs all to hell for no obvious reason on the reinstall. Other posts and threads have indicated this is a common problem, so I've recommended people have some decent replacements on hand, because, as my friend found out the hard way, you'll never find parts on the day you need them! (And I was motivated because if his car was on my lift overnight I was parking one of my cars outside!)

I dont know if you have a A6 or MN6 but FYI I read in another thread that GHL is still having drone issues with the new A6 exhaust.

I dropped the rear sway bar for the stock exhaust removal.
