I filled the car up tonite and I did not tighten the gas cap. Started the car and all seemed fine.
Later in the evening I started the car and the gas gauge moved slowly to the full position and got "service fuel system". I turned off the car and restarted and all seemed to check out okay. About an hour later same thing and this time I checked the gas cap and tightened it "service fuel system" error went away but the engine light came and stays on every time I start the car.
What do I do. I know I will take it to the dealer to check it out, but wondering if there is another fix.
A few months ago when I decided to take my first "trip" with my C5 vert to the car show at St. Armand's Circle, I filled up the car for the first time and when I got to Sarasota from Clearwater, FL all of a sudden I saw the message "service fuel system". I was dumbfounded. Then I saw the gas gauge reading EMPTY! Mind you, I just filled up the car about 45 miles before(1 Hr) and now its reading EMPTY! WTF, Over?
Then the gas gauge keep reading full, then empty, then full on and off thru out the weekend.
Finally I decided to call On-Star during the trip home on Sunday and was told that there was a problem in the left tank.
I took the car to the dealer the next day, and thankfully, all they had to do was re-program the computer or something and its been fine ever since. No big deal, really. Let the dealer do their thing. Good Luck.
There's supposed to be a software upgrade -- I have same problem each time I fill up and after about five miles, all is well. Will have dealer toy with it... someday.
I went ahead and re-started the car a few times and that seemed to clear the engine light. I will still have the dealer check it out just to be on the safe side.
I wouldn't bother with a dealer trip. My fuel cap failed and I had to have it replaced. When I ran by the dealer to get the cap installed, the tech that has the tool to reset the computer was not there. We went ahead and installed the replacement cap. The check engine light had come on prior to this. After several cycles of starting and stopping the car, the check engine light cleared and all has been well since (over a month on a daily driver). The computer is designed to retain certain errors for so many cycles before clearing them.
Don't replace the sending card!!!! Don't worry about that until the easy fix has been attempted. Have them reflash your ECM. There is a TSB about it. If you do a search on this site it will tell you everything you need to know. Just type in Service Fuel System.
