Default Passive CAI Product Question

I would like to round out, and slightly enhance, the horses on my C6 via passive CAI. I am looking at two products the “vortex rammer” and the “hurricane”. Both purport to enhance performance by approximately 20-30 HP and notwithstanding the fact that one may be a bolt on and the other may require a minor mod to the intake, has anyone had experience with both that they may be in a position to recommend one over the other and why? The other question is do they really meet their claim of 20-30HP gain i.e. is this a worthwhile mod for the purposes of finding and easy 20-30 HP?

Thanks,

Greg

The Hurricane is a much better product, especially in fit and finish. Both products will deliver 20-30 RWHP but an ECM recalibration (tune) is mandatory to reach those levels.

Any TRUE Cold Air Intake requires modifying something to the front of the car. You have to cut or replace some of the radiator shroud or other grill plastic to get COLD (ambient) AIR instead of the factory setup of air that's been thru the radiator and around the engine.

Watch the advertising carefully, some vendors are using the term CAI for an airbox and filter only.

I can recommend the Lingenfelter CAI, works great on my car. Removing and re-installing the shroud is a PITI but the install is pretty straightforward.

Thanks Charlie, that is exactly the kind of info I am looking for Order of magnitude wise, how much should I set aside for the re-tune, any thoughts?

none of the cold air intake on the market ALONE will give anywhere near that # on the dyno.

First off, you wont reach those numbers with any CAI on the market.. period.

Second a retune will cost you a pretty penny, upwards of 500 bucks if you want the car on the dyno.

If your not spending 50+ per HP then its probably bull.

As for good CAI, I havent heard anything about the hurricane. The redesigned vararam has been proven over and over and the lingenfelter and callaway are also good bets.

The easiest way to get the kind of horsepower your stating would be to throw on some long tube headers, but again that puts you in the 50 bucks per hp bracket.

Wouldnt waste your money on a "air box" or "cai" kit. Would be really lucky to get 10hp with a 500 buck tune. Modify your stock air box to get "cold" air to the stock filters. Cut along the sides of the plastic shroud in a triangle manner and then cut a hole in the middle of the shroud. I also cut the tops off the stock air "boxes" as well. Could definitely notice a difference (more responsive) when i hit the pedal! If you want to buy K&N filters to replace the stock filters (50 ea. ) that would be the only expence I would do. Put the 400 bucks towards a true power adder like Long Tube headers & x-pipe then tune it!!

Make sure ..the design is actually sucking in cold air...and not engine air....like the K&N. The box should be completely sealed off from the engine compartment.
