DOT vs Non-DOT Slicks
Is there a performance difference? I realize there is a nomenclature difference, and just because it's a DOT tire does not make it street legal, but for the same traction of rubber (comparing Goodyear Eagles compound #475 is similar to Hoosier R6) why do racers prefer non-DOT? I have looked all over the place for answers. It seems obvious, yet I can't find anything.
The Hoosier VRL ( Viper Racing Leage) tire is not DOT yet it is the same compound as the Hooser Grand Am (not DOT )tires. Both of these tires are harder then the Hoosier R6 compounds ( DOT ) and will last longer. But the R6 has more grip
I have run the Good Year Eagle G-19s in 470, 475 and 370 compounds.
with the GY G19s you have much more grip then the Hoosiers, but only get 3 to 4 weekends if that much out of a set.I think I averaged 3 weekends out of a set and the last weekend was not too good. If you slide you tires alot forget it. The R370s are very soft and I got 2 run sessions out of them before I corded these tires.
Now the GYs are also taller about a 37 series vs the hoosers at 30 or 35 seriers. So your speeds are a little higher. The GYs are also much lighter tires.
Weather some one chooses DOT or Non-DOT depeneds on the class runs of what they can run.
I run GoodYear G19s 475 compounds or Hooser VRLs. Depending on what I can get.
