Default Z51 vs. Base performance?

Hello to the board,

I am looking for performance data on a four speed automatic non-z51 C6. I saw a few figures in the threads, but can someone refer me to a road test or other source?

I am a details person. My old man has an 05' C6 (first delivered in the area) with a 4 speed auto, no Z51. The rear end gear ratio on a Z51 and the six speed manual must have a considerable impact on acceleration. My father reads car magazines but is not into details like me. So in his mind, his car runs 4.2 to 60 and a 12.7 1/4 mile. I have plenty of seat time in the car and I am guessing the figures are closer to 5.0 and 13.2 if you don't take the traction off (which he doesn't do when I egg him on at a stoplight). He challenged me to prove him wrong.

This is a great forum you have here. I am 1/2 considering a Z-06 myself.

Regards,
Dimitrii

The most reliable performance data there is on the subject you're asking about, comes straight from the manufacturer of the vehicles. GM themselves:

They are the same, it's been proven time and time again, it's called marketing.
But if a person pays more the the Z51, you can bet he'll believe it's faster

....

Where was this "proven"? A guy has an A4 '05 with perhaps 2.73 gears in it, or even 3.15 gears in it, how is that the "same" performance wise as an MN6 C6 Z51. Please point to "performance data," which is what the original poster requested, where they have been demonstrated as the "same".

BTW, nice Buick.

Definitely "bad-***!" And a logical move from the C6 if one is only looking to run flat out in a straight line. No need in spending all that money on a C6 Vette, when you can get into one of these for around 15-19 grand, or even less, if straight line racing is your bag.

Thats been a question I have not seen answered here and a question I would respectfully put to the original poster, as it ties into his thread.

Your interest seems to be in drag racing. Why spend 50-60 grand on a C6 Corvette designed to perform on a road course and at autocross events, if you just want to drag race? You can spend 1/4 of that on another car, like an '87 Buick, and beat the living crap out of it at the drags, at will, without having to worry so much about it?

Solid axle, automatic, big stall converter, big cam, inexpensive, easy to maintain, parts pretty cheap and not too hard to come by, turn up the boost, just the ticket for the drag strip. Whats it running, CYA-Vett, 10s?

IMO a 2005 non Z51 (4L65E, 4 speed) automatic with the optional 3.15 gears could be slightly quicker/faster than a 2005 Z51 auto due to a slightly higher curb weight and stiffer (less load transfer/squat) suspension on the Z51 cars.
The standard rear on 2005 non Z51 autos was a 2.73 of course and would likely run slower than all other combinations.

Just for the record and I'm sure you already know, the rear end ratio on the 2005 Z51 auto was different (3.15) from the ratio on the 6 speeds (all are 3.42), Z51 6 speeds do get lower (numerically higher) gearing inside the transmission of course.

By the way,

For 2007 Chevy republished their data.

Z51 manual is 4.1 and 12.5@115
non-Z51 manual is 4.2 and 12.6@115
A6 is 4.5 and 12.9@110

Also, all manual coupes are lested as top speed 186.

As for the 2005 automatic, even without the Z51 option you could get the lower geared 3.15 axle ratio, I did this on my BASE 2005 Vert.
Only options, Velocity Yellow, Polished Rims, and the 3.15 rear.
It ran a 12.57@110.57 on a 1.92 60'.
My 0-60 time was 4.5 as recorded on a Mr Dyno.

For comparison
My 2001 Viper GTS on an off idle launch was 4.1 street tires.
My 1999 WS6 6 speed was 5.0 off idle street tires
My 350Z 6 speed was 5.2 off idle street tires
My 1992 Lx was 4.8 with no traction when it was only a 11.8@122 car.

From what I have seen A4s with the 2.73 run in the range of 12.8-13.0 at 108-110. 0-60s would be about 4.6.

Howard

Most people don't buy the Corvette for its drag strip performance. It's the overall package. The reason to get the Z51 is really smmed-up in the lateral acceleration numbers, .92 (stock) v .98 (Z51).

1/4 mile performance by forum members shows 12.56 sec. & 12.69 sec. for A4 trannys, 12.48 sec. & 12.66 sec. for A6 trannys (see below). The 06 after the trap speed indicates the model year (if not 05) - if it's an 06, it's an A6 tranny, otherwise, it's an A4 tranny.

On a glass smooth surface maybe...throw in the bumps/ruts/potholes/manhole covers etc that I encounter here in NJ and you'd be quite surprised at just how well the more compliant base (FE1) C6 handles in comparison, Z51s tend to bounce around a bit in a scenario such as that.
I just feel that the actual real world gaps/performance differences between these two suspensions is not quite as large as the hype surrounding them implies.

The 12.56 is an A4 with a 3.15 rear and the 12.69 is an A6.

The best time on that list for an A4 with a 2.73 rear is 13.05.

You missed LS1LT1 that went 12.48 in a stock A6, that tranny rocks and is much closer to the manual than people realize. I can't beleive the GM numbers for the A6, I ran faster than that stock with a 2500 foot DA!

Glenn -

You know I have LS1LT1s times memorized.

This Thread was concerning the A4/2.73 gearing vs A4/3.15 gearing.

From the #s I have seen the A6 beats the A4/3.15 by 0.1.

I have yet to see an A4/2.73 run nearly as strong as either of the other two automatic until modded.

I do think the A4 that has run 11s is an A4/2.73 though

Sorry, I didn't pick that up (I'm just too lazy to read the whole thread!).

Yea, I have LS1LT1's times memorized also, he's my hero!
