Default Ported Intake Question

Help me understand....why does the FAST intake require firewall modification? If Chris can port the intake without it taking up more space, basically using the stock intake and modifying it, why can't the FAST guys do that? Is the intake very different? Why would they put out an intake that is such a PITA to deal with?

Just wondering...

The FAST is bigger on the firewall end. The Lingenfelter kit makes it look as though it came that way from the factory. The reason for install is always more HP.

The FAST manifold wasn't designed for the C6. If it had been, it could have been designed to fit without cutting.

That is very true. Because of this it is da@n expensive to install, and more expensive with the ProCharger.

Indeed, the FAST was not meant for the C6. The FAST drops in place of the LS1 or LS6 and accepts those fuel rails. The LS2 was a whole other animal as far as the intakes go. It's really a PAIN to swap a FAST in place of the LS2 intake due to the firewall and the fact that almost everything that goes on the intake must be adapted- fuel rails, injector o- rings, and MAP sensor. Only the TB fits and it isn't in exactly the same location as stock.

For 90% of the guys doing mods it may not be worth it. Not to mention the fact that the dealership service dept. pops the hood and sees whats up instantly. Even a painted FAST with the name ground off looks suspect.

But the FAST does deliver the most gain once ported - hands down.

Did you check the dyno I posted from your work? Not shabby and 1/2 the price (less if you do your own install)!

What about not ported, vs. your work...any comparisons out there? Honestly, your stuff flows really well.

Also, what is your process, turn around, and price? PM me if you wish.

Obviously, but are the gains that much better than porting the existing intake? Enough to make the installation worth it?

That is the really good question. Mine was done at time of ProCharger install so who knows how much I actually gained from it.

Ported manifolds are able to achieve about 1/2 of what the FAST can. That's why I say that a ported stock manifold is great for about 90% of the guys who mod their cars. The other 10% need ("need" is such subjective word!) the gains that the FAST can give and are willing to pay that much higher premium for it.

Budget is a consideration in all modification plans. Some horsepower is cheaper to obtain. However, when you're trying to scratch out every last bit... it gets expensive hence the FAST pricing and things like electric waterpumps. The cost per hp gained is very prohibitive.

is that because the FAST runners are larger, use a better flow design, or what ?

The answer is "D" all of the above.

The Plenum is different

The runners are different

and it's a different design geared not toward making a decent flowing intake that meets the manufacturer criteria, but rather a design that does as much as possible in place of the LS6 intake manifold.

Craig, as you know I'm very happy with my intake that Cory ported. I never thought the Fast was worth it cost wise, it's very expensive and unless you're going for 450+ hp no need to fool with it.

Here's my track results and intake install notes. It's an easy job.

I had my intake ported and gained 15/rwhp and 15/rwtq. $250 for porting and labor for removing and installing intake. Not bad at $17/rwhp.

Check the link above in my post - Cory (CHarris85Vette) has a good system set up. He ships you one, you swap it out, and you send him your original back. Worked like clockwork for me and the swap is really easy, with the couple of tips I posted.
