Default Cam decisions

I am ready to have a cam installed and would like some advise! The car is a 06 m6 with CIA, headers,GHL, polished intake and TB, and 160 thermo.
I am looking at the comp 224/228 .581/.588 @ 114, the car is a weekend driver and we do a lot of road trips with our club, is there much to be gained by going with a little larger cam than this? The car is @ 378 rwhp now before the polished intake or TB, I am hoping for 415-420 rwhp.
Thanks for any input.

Best advice is to call the most respected tuner near you & discuss your options....the pros & cons of so many combos need to be carefully considered.

Thats true enough, I have a great tuner in Dallas and he has several cams that he likes, he says this one is the most street friendly, but I would like to here from the corvette owners that are running the cams and hear their opinions also.

I would like know as well from other vette owners who have tried various cams and what you experienced. My brother and I are considering on both of our cars... adding cams and port and polished heads. Coast Corvette was estimating gains between 75-100HP? Thanks for the 411!

You have picked one of the most popular cams around, should work great with your combo. Idle, emissions, and street manners should be great. Like any cam swap, your car will benefit from a computer tune though.

With that cam, you can run Comp Cams "918" single springs, & 7.4" hardened pushrods. Unless you plan a lot of track time, you don't need the titanium retainers or any special lifters. Because of the relatively high lift from the XE-R grind, you might get a slight increase in valvetrain noise (sewing machine sound), maybe not.

Enjoy!

If you arent planning a head swap to increase compression the cam is good but get it custom made by comp with a 2-4 degree advance to bump up the power in the low end and midrange.

Go with either that one...probably the best "all around" application...I have the G1 cam from MTI (Texas not atl) 228/232 .588 .575 specs. and i really like it has good sound to it and it pretty friendly around town. My vette is a weekend car too...Here is a vid i have. These two are probably two of the more poplular cam sizes out there among many others...

Thanks for the info! I don' plan on changing out the heads but we will do the springs and retainers, also re-tune , 21 century is doing the work and they are really great to work with, John runs a first class operation, has some great mechanics, and is very customer friendly. I will check on the plus 2 or 4 degree all though I am not sure I totally understand it.
Thanks !

Definitely tuning in on this one.

What is the average cost for a cam, installation, and tune?

I am thinking somewhere in the range of $2000-$2500, mostly labor costs.

xstang -

Amazing how docile that cam sounds.

How does your cam feel down low, it sounds a little choppy pulling away.
Do you feel any hesitaton at part throttle down low?

Sounds great though!

I don't want to HIJACK the thread, but....
Are there any gains to be had by leaving the STOCK cam, but changing out the heads?
You know what, I'll start a new thread on this.
Don't respond here.

I was told that an other good option would be the 228/232/581/588/113cl and it would add a little hp and still be very driveable on the street! is any one running this cam? I would like the extra 7or 8 hp but I want to keep it fun to drive.

I have a 228/232 xer 114. It had a lot more tuning issues but aside from the lope, it is as drivable as the 224/230 xer was. Both awesome cams but if you arent changing heads, the compression will be even lower and lose even more TQ. Now that I have it tuned great, I love it. My car shakes quite a bit though at lights. The exhaust note is raspy with headers and the stock exhaust. If the exhaust was changed, it would shake and have that mean sound. I like it quiet though.

Spinmaster, the cam I am looking at is on a 113 cl , what would be the difference between the 114 cl and the 113, also does anyone have a soundclip of this cam, I found several on the 224/228/114cl.
Thanks, for all the info you really know your stuff. I have not installed a cam in over 20 years a lot has changed, the last cam I had in a car was my 64 corvette with the old 30-30 solid lifter cam, loved it!

The 113 LSA will give you a slightly choppier idle. If you are interested in street manners and driveability, I would stick with the 114.
