Now having said that I'd also bet my last dollar that if they do increase the base vette's HP to 450, the current 505HP Z06 will drop in price like a stone. And by that I mean what every other 2 or 3 year old car depreciates at. I'd guess in 2009 a 2007 Z06 might be worth $50K something and an 06 in the $40K range.

That's a lot of car for the $$$. I'd be tempted at those prices since any new BIG HP vette will most likely be selling for double that.

I look for "big brother" to step in like they did in 1970 and put a quick stop to the horsepower wars.

The fact is that very few Vette owners can safely handle a 400hp car.

As someone who is in the market for a Corvette next fall, perhaps winter (finances), I am very interested in this rumor. It would be a shame to buy in the Feb-April time frame. Then find you are the owner of an obsolete car that following fall.

I am out of the loop and have not heard when the new engine (LS3?) is going in the vette. I know it was a slip of the lip by Saleen, but is there anything else anyone knows that supports the assertion of a 450 HP for the 09 C6?

Thanks.

Oh, comments are welcome. I have owned Mustangs and Camaro Z28s since '88. Yet I have never been racing, track or street. While usually more is better, with cars reaching 400 - 500 HP levels, I am beginning to wonder how much horsepower one really needs? 400 HP, 450 HP, will we really notice the difference?

While I love all the newfound power that the manufaturers are putting in these cars(GT500,Z06,Viper,etc..) I agree completely that there will be some mandated restraint put to the manufacturers or the buyers as to just how much HP they're allowed. I've heard that there may be a "school" of sorts to attend before buying a Z06 in upcoming years. The HP wars ended in the 70's due to gas prices and even though prices now seem soooo much higher, even with inflation adjustment, the people keep buying gas guzzlers like Hummers and other SUVs .If anything, emmissions and safety issues will kill this horsepower revival:6(!) airbags, tire pressure sensors,t/c ,tm,runflats, all contribute to the end of the "pure" sport car.

Jeez, you make it sound like the C6 is one of those rocket cars that they run for land speed records.

The car is very easy to handle as long as you use the same common sense that is needed to operate any vechile.

Any car that can achieve almost 200mph should have someone who knows how to drve behind the wheel. Where it may be esy for us long time drivers and racers, alot of others getting a fast car for the first time is in for a differant world.

The C6 isn't that fast stock and who goes almost 200mph? Even if I wanted, I have yet to find a road where I can even go 120, let alone closing the gap on 200mph.

I dont need more than 400hp. I admit it, but I mod to personalize the car for me. Headers make more power but also sound bad-a$$, A nice head and cam package for a little lope and more throttle response is on my list, not just for a beter 1/4 mile time, but to make it more to my liking. Now, getting 25 more hp and getting more complex with DOD and VVt, you can have it, Yes its good, but not enough for me to move up in model years or to wait for.

I've been clocked at 184mph on the Hwy in a past ride(won't tell you where.... ) and I made one of those "Your speed is"...signs readout "---" . I wasn't saying this car it TOO much for someone with experience, just that it is a handful for a newbie to sprots cars, esp without t/c on and esp if , say , they hit the lotto and got a Z06...would you line up beside someone on the street who's last ride consisted of a plymouth breeze and now they drive a 505 hp monster? I don't even want to be in the same state with them. That being said, maybe there should be a "test" of sorts, such as a road course and braking course , kinda like if you go get certified (here in NC, anyways) to get a motorcycle licence.

To someone who just traded in their Honda S2000 or 350Z for a new Vette, the C6 is crazy fast.
I don't know where you live, but there are plenty of places on US interstates that you could run your car up to 180mph easy. (illegally of course)

Default 2009 base Vette 450 hp

Maybe not 2008, but here's the quote and here’s the Road and Track link for the full interview:

CC: What kind of upgrades will you make, have you seen the engine GM is using in the Camaro?

Saleen: I hope I don't get in trouble with GM for saying this, but they're using a 6.2 liter 450 horsepower engine for the premium V8 in the 2009 Camaro and the base Corvette. The base V8 will probably be a detuned version of the same 6.2. So we'll just upgrade the 6.2 liter V8 to Saleen level specifications. We're going to upgrade the 6.2 liter V8 if we're given the legal chance by GM. Our base model should have around 485 horsepower, and expect our Extreme Supercharged Camaro to have over 600 horsepower.

Just an observation. But the Camaro won't be available until 2009 for a 450 HP engine. What's to keep the corvette from receiving this engine in 2008?

I guess time will answer all these questions.

I'm happy with my obsolete LS2, if I need more hp I'll just do a few mods and be done with it. As has been stated before, buying a corvette is like buying a new computer.....soon afterwards it's surpased in power. When the C7 comes out in 2010-2011 look for 500hp+ stocknin the base car.

I know you guys won't like it, but for me, if the 2008 C6s get more power than the 05-07 that'll hopefully drop the resale value on the 05-07 a bit quicker so I can finally afford one! That's how I got my C5 actually, as the resale value dropped big time on them once the C6 came out (I bought my 98 C5 in Aug 2004, right when the C6s were first hitting the streets)

And I'll just get a dyno tune and Vararam done to the LS2 to make up the extra 25-35hp the 2008 might have.

That was my take on it when I read that quote. There is nothing to imply that this motor won't be in the 2008 Corvette.

Exactly!

I can understand if you already bought one, but if you live in a cold climate, I think I'm just going to wait for the '08
