Well I got a chance to see what the top speed of the A6 was. Well almost anyway, not enough room at the facility I was at. And before you start asking where don't, my friend could get in trouble if his bosses found out.
On the first run I forgot I was in 6th, stupid me. But I did found out that 140 is about tops in that gear. The second run I put it into paddles and got to about 160, shift to soon into fifth. On the last run we got it up to 172 or so. Still shifted into fifth to soon. Once you shift into 5th your acceleration while still there really slows down.
The car was very stable at this speed but the wind noise really gets loud at this speed. If we had the room, never did measure the distance we had, I could of gone faster, it was still picking up speed but very slowly. It would also be nice to have plenty of shutdown room, the brakes got very hot.
If I get at chance again things I would change. Air the tires up to about 40 pounds hot and run 4th all the way to red line. In addition I would like to have at least 5 miles of track to attempt it (maybe more). It may take the salt flats or a dry lake bed to really do this. I'm fairly sure I have warpped the roters from needing to shut down the car so fast.
I'd like to know that my A6 is a true 180+mph car like the manuals are just for bragging rights but I just get too scared at anything over 140mph anyway so I think I'll just stick with getting up to speed from a standstill as quickly as possible.

You get scared over 140 mph BECAUSE YOU HAVE A BRAIN!!!!!
I'd really like to run my car at high speed, but it would have to be at the dry lake bed or salt flats, I'm way too scared to go that fast on the highway.

I agree on the highway 120mph is to fast unless you are doing something like the Silver State. But on a closed course that is another story. I have had many vehicles in the 140mph range. My wife Mustang GT is a bear at that speed, very unstable IMO. The Vette on the other hand is so stable if you didn't look outside and had ear protection on you would not know you are going that fast. I hope I get a chance at a longer course early next year to see if I can get 180+. Otherwise someone else will have to figure it out as I will either get a a Z06 or an 08 C6.

Just tell everyone it goes 186! We all know GM would not lie and nobody else is going to get the chance to find out in your car.
