Just purchased 07 Z 51 with a 6 sd. When shifting from first to second, it is the worst i have ever driven!!! Has any one else had this problem?? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!! Jim B

That might be your problem. GM designed into the MN6 transmission, CAGS. Computer Assited Gear Selection. Basically it adjusts the shift tunnels in the shifter so that you have to shift from 1st-4th if you're rpms are under 2300 I believe. It's in the owners manual. It was designed for fuel economy. Most owners remove it with a tune or a $25 unit know as the skipt shift eliminator sold by many of the vendors. You can also drive around it by bringing your rpms another 100-200 or so higher. This is most likely what is causing the awkward feel going from 1st-2nd.
The transmission is designed to force a 1 -4 shift (fuel savings) at low speed/low throttle position. Trying to force the transmission into any gear other than 4th can damage the transmission.
To avoid this requirement, shift at a higher speed or higher throttle setting or, as suggested, install a CAGS eliminator.
If, however, you are having a problem shifting to 2nd and the speed is higher than about 20 MPH or the throttle is more than 21%, then the problem may be other than the 1-4 CAGS. I that case, have a tech check it out.
Since you're getting into second gear (you say getting in is not smooth), the problem is not the CAGS...when CAGS intervenes, you don't get into second, period. You may want the CAGS eliminator to have better control of your vehicle, but it won't help rough shifting of the MN6 when the fluid temp is cold.
Difficult shifting when transmission fluid is cold is a common problem for the MN6 and not really serviceable. You can patiently wait for the transmission oil temp to come up, or change to another fluid. Do a search and take your choice of threads. I haven't noticed this problem much this year...either I'm just accustomed to it or it hasn't been cold enough to really make it noticeable yet.

My '07 Z51 has the same problem. It does get better as the car warms up. Hope it gets better with CAGS bypass. My brother's '01 has a slight "notch" going from 1-2 also. He never did the CAGS thing.

Same here, 07, z51, 5800 miles on it now, better, but still cranky until
warm. Once its warmed up (oil temp > 180 in the DIC) the MZ6 shifts
like butter.
Same problem here with my 07 Z51 M6, when the fluid is not fully warmed up.
Based on the recommendations of folks on this forum, I changed the fluid to Royal Purple Synchromax. Now, the shifts are much better when the fluid is cold and they become smooth at fluid temps well below fully warmed up.

That temperature is engine oil temp and has nothing to do with the MN6 temperature.
True, the temp is engine oil, however that is the only way you can gauge the tranny fluid as there is not gauge on that. It also warms up as the engine warms up only at a slower rate.
