Default Using front wheels for drag radials?

Has anyone taken the stock 18" x 8.5" front rims and put 245/40 -18 Goodrich Drag Radials on them and then use them for the rear? Seems to me, this would still be better than the run flats. 245 section drag radials hook up good for an F-body and the Corvette is lighter.

I'm not going to run sensors, I've heard you can drive a while without them.

No brake clearance issues with an 18" rim, people have put 17" on the rears.

I think there's also a 265x40x18 (a little wide for a stock 8.5" rim yes but it will work) that would work even better (being both wider and of a taller overall diameter/closer to the stock rears), the only problem with either one is that it might look a little funny back there being more narrow than the stock 285s. Good idea though IMO.

They quote that you need a 9" wide rim for the 265's. I would bet the 265's should fit the 8.5" rims.

I'm running C5 17" fronts with MT ET Streets with a Z51. No problems at all with sensors or traction but I have to trailer them to the track, no way I'd drive these on the street.

They are a heck of a lot cheaper than runflats so I don't feel bad at all about burning them out! And, it seems to me most guys who break their rear ends do it on hard runflats wheel hopping.

Joe,
What width and offset are the rims, also do they stick out in the rear or do they stay inside the fender??? I'm trying to decide which way to go...

8.5, stock offset for C5's (not sure what it is but I know the info is on the forum if you need it).

They don't stick out. My car's lowered on cut bushings. Take a look:

Yep! I believe so, they are stored so I can't check now. They are pretty tall so they took a couple mph off my traps but gave it back to me in consistent 60's and E/T's.

Those might be the ET Street Drag Radials that you're looking at, the tires in the pic above are ET Street DOT Slicks (bias plies)...that price reflects this as well (ET Street drag radials usually cost more than ET Streets).

Wagons are the same size as the wheels I'm using, 8.5. The M/T ET Streets are a bias ply and are the cheapest (and LIGHT - these things weigh next to nothing).

I used to run M/T drag radials on these wheels, they fit fine. 275/40/17. My buddy bought them from me and runs them on wagon wheels which you often can pick up for free or $25 per wheel.

I need to warn you though. Being bias ply you should run bias ply tires up front. Now there are many guys I run with who don't run bias up front but I don't want to mislead anybody. They can get a little squirrely on the big end, particularly if you run too low a pressure in them. I keep my pressure around 25 and I'm ok, plus I'm used to it. Growing up I used to deliver newspapers - when our van was chock full it would get the same "sway" so I'm more familiar with it than I care to be.

I'm basically stock. If I was running 125+ traps like some modded guys I would think twice before mixing radials and bias and I'd spring for the CCW wheels and skinnys (they help your e/t anyway).

And in my opinion, don't even think about driving ET Streets on the street. These things are slicks. That hairline crack in them would do nothing for you if you ran into a puddle driving to the strip! I once got stuck and had to drive my Hurst/Olds on ET Streets for about a mile on damp roads, it was the scariest mile I've ever driven and I grew up where it snows and ices a lot (St. Louis). That should tell you something. I have lots of buddies who daily drive on drag radials though, they seem to be fine so long as they still have decent tread on them.

I bought an extra set of 18" rims and I am running 345 30 18 Drag Radials at 17lbs of pressure on the track. They are awesome! I simply take off my rear wheels/ tires and put on my DR's.
