Bose amp options?

Just replaced the front and rear speakers except for the subs, MUCH better. Now, I want to do away with the muddy Bose amp. I know it's possible to change the amp with the factory HU but can't find any threads that describe the parts/process. I'm thinking a straight stereo split with the 3 speakers on each side wired through a crossover to split low/mid/high speakers on each side.
Anyone done this themselves and willing to provide guidance? Thanks!

The stock head units have line-level outputs, you don't need any fancy converters to get the signal, you can do it by tapping in or with a $20 wiring harness.
