Default how do you make exhaust flame?

Im wondering what it is that makes that small flame come out the exhaust tips of a car. I dont mean those long crazy flames that you get by using a flame thrower kit. I mean the ones you see on the C6R for example and other lemans cars. Seems to happen at high rpm every time they shift. I think it looks awesome. Anyone know why they do it, and can our cars do the same somehow? Weird question I know, but have to ask!

Its just unspent fuel burning off. Hit the rev limiter and you have a good chance of getting the flame. However, I wouldnt bang the rev limiter any more than you must.

Also helps to have an open exhaust, and a big cam w/ lots of overlap.

sorry...I know it's only slightly revelant...it just remonds me of a ricer here in town who's car caught fire after installation of "flamethrowers". His aftermarket rear bumper cover went up quick (had recently been painted too) and then the carpet in the trunk...I felt bad he lost his car, but

I have seen this one time from a Lotus on the highway at night. It was a small blueish flame that hardly extended past the exhaust tips. Followed it for miles and it was definitely cool looking, but nothing more then inefficient burn off of excess fuel.

Drive south about six blocks and cross the border into Mexico, I am sure someone there could help you. I used to go to Mexico City allot and saw lots flaming exhaust there.

Also a spark plug in the tip with a coil to fire it and a propane bottle (like a small torch uses) to fuel it.

Shorter pipes, headers that dump right out without cats or muffler.
Like my '67 Honda 450 with TT pipes. Loudest bike in town, and shot flames at night. Pipes glowed red. Really cool, I mean hot!
Went way slower than it sounded unfortunately.

Are you running cats on your x-pipe? Maybe the key is headers with no cats?

BACK FIRES ARE DIFFERENT FROM FLAMES OUT THE REAR...
I ACTUALY HAVE A FLAME THROWER KIT ON MY CAR..
YOU NEED A WAY TO IGNITE THE FUEL IN THE EXHAUST...
WELD SOM OXYGEN SENSOR BUNGS TO THE TOP OF THE EXHAUST TIP..
JUST INSIDE THE BUMPER COVER SO YOU DONT SEE THEM..
INSTALL SOME SPARK PLUGS, AND A COIL AND SPARK PLUG WIRES..
YOU HAVE TO RIG THE IGNITION FOR THE COIL..
I USED A MSD COIL AND IGNITION SYSTEM FROM A 4 CYLINDER..
LOOKS COOL..

FLAMES SHOOT OUT AROUND 20 FEET ON HARD ACCEL..
MAKE SURE NOBODY IS BEHIND YOU..

AND IT REALLY WORKS GOOD ON CARS THAT RUN REALLY FAT...
(IF YOU HAVE A MAIL ORDER TUNE>>>)

if you want to shoot flames, sell your corvette and buy and sti.. they shoot flames constantly when modded. Turbo cars run rich off throttle an thus tend to shoot many. I had some large fire plumes coming out of my evos tail pipe as well... So If your running catless with a turbo on a corvette, good chance you would get the occasional fireball.

I dont see how you can have fireballs with cats

Inject gasoline and compressed pure oxygen into the exhaust with an active sparkplug mounted downstream. Should work.

Haha...that may work a lil TOO well (pure oxygen/fuel).

And I've seen the kits for those 20' flames...but i just want that "backfire" type flame. Well im gonna take the cats off and if that doesnt work....well I guess i'll have to...pretend?
