Default Free Cold Air! & PICS

No need to cut anything to get the colder air into your performace or stock air intake. Just remove the two plastic fastners at the bottom of the plastic radiator shield and pull it back an inch or two. I used a rubber roll bar insulator to prop it open to feed cooler air to my K&N Performance Intake. It provides great cold forced air right into your air filter allowing less access to water than other CAI's. BONUS: Just remove your prop in really wet conditions and your back to the stock protection and look.

I cut a flap in the shroud and pushed it down into the airflow to the radiator. I can also push the flap back in position. However, I like your idea better. I'll try it.

Thanks,

Default How Its Done!

Lay in front of the car. From under the car try and pull the shroud away from the frame at the bottom. You will see you can not, because it is held in place by two plastic push in fastners, (Similar to the fastners holding the hood liner on.) They are located inside those two molded notches/indentations (1"x2") at the bottom of the shroud. I was able to just use my forefinger and thumb, pinching and pulling until they poped out. They pop out toward the radiator. (They were not damaged and can be used again.)

Once they are removed you will be able to push back the shroud, in the center along the bottom. Bingo you will see your air filter. The shroud is about 24 inches wide at the bottom. The ends of the shroud will stay in place, but as you pull back at the center you will see how it opens up. Looks like a half moon. You can let in a little air or alot. Just use some kind of a prop in the center position and it will stay open untill you decide to close it. No Cutting, No damage. Just free cold air!

If you can see the filters from the ground then water from a wet road, puddles, etc, have a line-of-sight shot to the filters, too. Could this be a problem?

Very much so. And the same is true for all the CAI's. Air and water will get to all the CAI's out there. Drive for any length of time in the rain with CAI and then examine your air filter. The air passage will take water particles to the filter, it's physics.
The filter will be wet. Not a good thing. That's why stock intakes are so restrictive, Engineers are trying to keep the filter dry! Can light amounts of water get threw the filter and damage the engine, CAI makers say no, but they also say don't drive in large puddles. Have you even driven in the rain and missed all the puddles? Can you tell a large puddle from a small puddle, driving at night?
If you notice in my post, I indicate that the protective shroud can easily be put back to the stock position, when rain is encountered.
One other note: I don't believe the air filter would produce good flow if it were wet/damp.

Same here. I've done it at least 10 times and I can't picture what you are referring to.

Thanks

i know what he is talking about now...it is the 2 center main plastic fastners...it has the center post that you have to pull out first then the fastner comes out. i hope that makes sense.

Follow the basic instructions above but do the additional following while laying down parallel to the front of car: reach your hand up from behind the splitter (the lower or horizonal bottom part of the ram air intake) from the floor underneath the car and infront of the air conditioning condenser and run your hand across the bottom and you will feel the two indentations along the edge on the shroud that angles up toward the top of the air conditioning condenser. You will feel the fasters and their slightly protruding head, follow his instructions from above to remove. Tip: a small pair of dykes or wire cutters might help grip and remove the inserts, DO NOT SQUEEZE HARD OR YOU WILL CUT THEM OFF. I hope this will clarify this and we can do this without pictures. Hopefully, this will help. Thanks again for the original idea and snooping around under that Vette, vredvet. IT IS GREAT! I will be doing mine in the morning after breakfast. Last week I was looking around under the hood with the possibility of turning over and reversing the air intakes and cutting the shroud. From above, you could not see any fastners and it was firmly mounted as you indicated. I'm glad you found the key to loosening it. It is awful hard to look under that car without a lift. I had some other options that I did not like but yours is great. Thanks!

Same here, I've already opened up the air box a little bit and got some Fram Air Hog filters (not yet installed) but still wasn't sure how I was going to get colder/fresher air to them without doing permanent damage, now I know how. A big thanks as well.

You know I saw this thread.

I don't want to drill holes in my new car just yet like I did with my 2006.

I did put some K&N replacement filters in the stock box already.

Try a K&N or Blackwing Performance Intake with this method. There are no holes to drill and there is no cutting. A BIG, YOUR WELCOME!!, to all of you.

I just took pics of the mod. Can someone guide me, in detal, on how to post them to a thread. Will try and post tonight. Thanks.

I PM'd him with instructions:

Go to www.photobucket.com and get an account, it's free. You'll be able to upload your pics to that site. Once you do, there will be three options under each photo. Left click on the last option, (the third one under the pic) it will flash "copied"." Go to the CF thread and inside the dialog box, wherever you want the pic, right click. Click on "paste." Wala! You're done.

Also on your camera, go to the pic size setting. You'll see 1600, 1280, 640, etc. Try setting it on 640. That way they'll fit on the screen and we won't have to scroll back and forth to see them.

Thanks Tom. After you completed the proped opening and view the mod from the front end, you will see that not just an opening was made. It creates an air scoop that extends down from behind of the grill. This scoop effect directs lots of cold air to the air filter. Much like the front brake air ducts work!
