If it's stock you have a problem and should take it to the dealer.

In addition to the above questions, does it ping on all brands of 93 octane gas or just certain brands?

or bad fuel... full or contaminates... aarrggghhh.....

i know, i know, some folks won't agree, but short of getting a $400 tune you could try a $50 set of plugs. try the ngk tr6's. just one step cooler should give you an idea what's going on.

Turn the radio up.

Just kidding. Do you open it up and let it rip wide open once in a while? That helps keep the carbon cleaned out.

The programming doesn't change, so unlike cars 30 + years ago where timing needed to be periodically adjusted, in these the timing never changes. It doesn't fall out of tune or anything like that. It is running on the factory programmed timing map, and the gas in your area is not ideal. Just because it says 93, doesn't mean that's what's in the tank. And not all 93 is the same. They get to that octane with different chemicals in different areas of the country. A car can react differently to 93 from area to area, brand to brand. Try Shell, I've always had good luck with them and they are a top tier.

But seriously, turn the radio up. If you pay real close attention to almost any performance engine with decent compression, you can hear a little ping now and then. Fogettaboutit.

Will Do. I can't see spending $600 for a tune.

Every newer Corvette I've owned (couple of C5s and a C6) has pinged in warmer weather. Dealership claims it's the additive in gasoline in TX during the summer. Have read other people claim the same on the Forum. Even after intake to muffler replacement in a C5 with tune from 21st Century Musclecars, that car pinged too. YMMV.

I recently had my car tuned by Rick at Synergy. My stock C6 A6 pinged as well. Rick drives it on the street before he puts it on the dyno and noticed the pinging as well. In fact, he stated that most of the C6's he tunes ping due to the way the factory tune is setup. After the tune, no more pinging. Here is a post from another forum member that had the same problem and Rick got rid of the pinging by doing a tune as well.

That you report you hear it pinging and dont state that you scanned it says to me it isnt pinging. This car will keep pulling timing until it stops knock therefore it doesnt knock. If you are near LI NY, I will scan it for free and let you know what is going on (filling out bio info sometimes is a help to others). I can assure you there is no knock from fuel or any other source. Only a scan would show if there is knock retard and even if it does, knock retard isnt knock.

My car makes the sound I thought is pinging under high load in 5th and 6th but the scans showed normal operation. You car isnt pinging and i will beleive it when I see it in a scan.

I just talked to the guy that tuned my Z28. He's been tuning C6's using HPtuners. He said a couple of things that stuck with me. First he said as far as making more power, he does it by getting the A/F correct, not by adding more timing. He said the car doesn't have a lot of timing from the factory, but that it will ping if you try and add any more.

Second, he said he can't seem to remove any torque management on the A6 cars. He said the computer pulls 20 degrees of timing everytime the A6 shifts and he can't change this using HPtuners. He also said he probably wouldn't want to change it just to protect the tranny.

glenn, it is hard to add additional timing with our great 91 octan gas here. with your A/f at 13-1 it looks like you just talk yourself out of a tune..
