If you use this technique the caliper will easily slide away from the pads (caliper still bolted at the bottom). C5 XTC
Give the 2 screwdriver trick a try next time. I promise you will love it and never touch the c clamp again! I learned it from, of all things, an article in Corvette Fever. Everyone I've shown it to never goes back. I push the pistons back in literally 10 seconds.
Many thanks to JoeG for these hints ... just did mine today ... I still was a little confused and accidentally removed the wrong bolt to start with! I have a copy of photos here to help out others.
Here is the way I applied the screwdriver trick mentioned -worked like a charm!!
Make sure to loosen the proper bolt - the one with the 15mm hex head and the locking nut shown here
I used a 15mm socket with an adjustable as shown here - worked like a charm
When you swing the caliper down (wiggle it a bit if you need to - it'll go) it will look like this - just slide out the old pads and slide in the new!

Glad to help. That screwdriver trick is a real time saver. Wish I'd known that 25 years ago! Wow I'm getting old. Great pics, makes the thread.
Thanks Man ... I have been tapping into the work others on here have done and figured I need to start giving back when I can ... I know how much pictures really help a person understand things better ... it really can help augment the writeups ...

Also interested in what you guys are doing for the stock rotors when putting new pads in? Take them somewhere to get machined? Sand them yourself? Just bed in the new pads well?

Thanks for the great thread by the way.
I've never surfaced the rotors. Just put on new pads and go. No problems, 48000 miles.
So does anyone actually replace those caliper retaining clips? My ACDelco pads came with a set of metal clips that say to replace the old ones. Is this necessary?
Many thanks to tjfontaine.....like the man says "A picture is worth a thousand words."! Getting ready to do a first pad swap this Spring & the pictures are invaluable.
I love this procedure! It's so easy and fast to swap pads using it.
I don't think this works on GS brakes as they are a fixed caliper so you can't slide it back on the pistons like you can a base or Z51. But I've not changed brakes on a GS or Z, only looked at the calipers so perhaps someone smarter than me will chime in.

Thanks Joe, you are correct and I found a nice write up with photos in the Z forum.
