Can anyone tell me the correct way of checking the gearbox fluid in a 6 speed manual gearbox. We have several cars here in New Zealand and every car I have checked apears to have little or no fluid in the gearbox. Its says the box should have 3.9 litres of fluid but when you check the fluid level we have had to put up to 3 litres to get to the filler mark,4 out of 5 cars checked have needed fluid, what are we doing wrong?.Has anybody else checked theirs and found this? Thanks Rod
The fluid level is measured from the bottom of the transmission, so in the southern hemisphere you have to turn the car over to check it.
Seriously, I'm not sure about the "fill mark" you mention. As far as I know, there really isn't a mark - you just fill it up 'till it comes out the filler hole, which is about half-way up the side of the transmission. You are talking about the 6-speed manual, right? Not the paddle-shifter?
I can't think of any significant error in the "fill it up 'till it runneth over" method, so I'd say that these cars are likely to be low on fluid. Perhaps it leaked out when the car turned over crossing the equator.
I changed mine at 3K miles and got about 3.75 liters out, so it had approximately the right amount. and I haven't heard of any other forum members with a problem.
Fill to the bottom of the fill plug hole in the side of the tranny. When oil starts to pour out of the fill plug hole, it's full. Vehicle must be level.
If you have the Z51, it is a good practice to drive the vehicle after a fill, to ensure all the air is pruged out of the cooler lines and then recheck the oil level.
Thanks for the info,I didnt think there was anything special you had to do in checking the fluid level but thought I would ask.I dont know why 4 out of 5 cars have had very low fluid levels has anyone else experienced this? Thanks
