Default Changing Heads

When changing out heads on an LS-2 motor, do I have to pull the thermostat first to drain the block?? If I pull the heads will any anti-freeze come out?

I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I have to ask.

Thanks

I drain the radiator first make it easy for you! When you pull off the heads it won't be a pool of anti-freeze all over the place ;>)

A very little will be in some of the cylinders. Simply wipe it out and you're done.

Default no smartness here

Not being smart but if asking questions such as this, do you know what you are doing, have a detailed procedure/shop manual and or someone assisting with experience. Swapping heads and cam is not hard but also not that simple. You will be dealing with springs, rods, lifters, oil pump re-sealing, radiator draining/removal etc. The car will need a tune after that as well. There are post in here and a tech site GM has in the LS1 section that details it. Dont want to drop a lifter down. Anyway trying to help not bash as an inexperienced person can get themselves in a heap of trouble real quick.

You really need to pull the plug out of the side of the block to get the coolant out. Simply draining the radiator won't get near enough of the coolant out.

It really doesn't matter how much you spill as long as you clean it out, especially in the head bolt holes, if you don't, you'll crack your block

I appreciate all the help I can get. I don’t think you are bashing. More informative. I want to learn and am eager to learn. My concern it that I don’t ask enough questions and get myself into a jam, at which point I’m screwed. I would rather ask questions and learn from people who are in the Know than not ask and get screwed. The only dumb question is the one not asked. Believe me I don’t know everything but I want to learn. Might not be the right vehicle to learn on but you have to start somewhere.

Thanks

If you are "eager to learn' and want to do it yourself you had better start with a Helms Factory Service Manual. And maybe a few days spent on howstuffworks.com and wikipedia.

You'll get some well intentioned wrong advice AND some ill intentioned wrong advice from the Forum.
