Default Gear whine question

Ive had my 410s in for a few months now and ive noticed the past 2 weeks that the gear whine is getting kind of bad.Does this mean they werent set right? Does the whine necessarily mean my rear could go out at any time or what? The installer is not someone I would go back to,to have them re do it.I never really honestly heard it because my exhaust system is so loud and I always have the radio on.It runs fine though.

I have some whine with the 4.10's from 55-75 when it's not under load. Had it from day one..But it is not something that I am worried about..If you hear excessive chattering clicks from the rear, then I would have it checked..BTW have you changed the rear gear oil? I would change it if I were you ASAP..Should have been changed at 1000 miles.

4.10s (and bigger) especially tend to make a little more noise. And I agree it's likely not something to worry about, usually a little noise means that they're set up more for strength then quietness, at least that's how it's been with the F-bodies and 12 bolt rears.

I've had 2 3:90 sets and neither have whined. I was strict on the 500 mile break in. Don't know if that helped or if I'm just lucky. I drag raced both sets pretty regularly in the Corvette Challenge.

if it whines under throttle and then quiets down when off throttle coasting, prepare yourself for failure.

I guess I better change the gear oil,its been over 1k miles. The whine is only there when I take out the clutch and slow the car down.It doesnt make the noise when im on the gas at all.I had it sometimes in my mustangs with 410s,but I think this might be the loudest. The car is a beast out of the whole though!!! I certainly didnt do that mod to baby the car,so I will still beat on it the same way and see what happens.I finally got the roof fixed which was about to blow off any day,so now I can finally make it to moroso and see what she runs.Im hoping for 11'9s to 12.2s at the worst. The car has an intake, tune, kooks headers, off road x,and bullet quads with the 410s.I guess it will be up to the tires to get those times, because the car shouldnt be any slower with those mods.

I followed the 500 mile break in with a few spirited bursts, I only hear a slight whine on deceleration between 75-55, not when I gas it. I think it's the tranny whinning. So far no problem...Just change the oil..Good luck at Moroso, and keep us posted on track numbers.. Oh by the way, when you change the diffrential fluid, change the tranny fluid to royal purple much better shifts and you retain factory warranty on the tranny..

A whine does not sound right. The only time I have ever had a whine, the differential went out.

If it whines, the gear lash wasn't set properly. You won't necessarily get a "failure", but the whine will continually get louder. run it until you can't stand it then have a good mechanic put new ones in it. Once it has started to wear, there is no resetting of the lash to fix it. fluid change won't help. I had a 55 Chevy years ago and had 4:11s in it that weren't set up right, after running it until it got really loud, I tore it down and the pinion gear teeth were so sharp you could shave with them. (they start out pretty blunt). Good Luck.

What is involved in setting the gear lash? Does the rear end have to come out or can it be set (adjusted) in place, with the cover off??

It cannot be set while in the car. And chances are the gears have been damaged from not being set up properly or properly broken in. Will have to replace to eliminate noise.
