I just went through getting a "check engine light" diagnosed a couple of weeks ago on my '06 and convinced the service manager I needed a new gas cap. You could tighten the old one and then pull it off without turning it, so it was bad. At first, their advice was "screw it on tighter" until I mentioned that I have been putting gas in the car since new and just now have started having the problem, so they relented and changed it out, cleared the codes and away I went.
Now, right after filling up (self service; 2nd or 3rd time since getting the cap replaced) I get another #@*%! "check engine" light. Am I so f'ked up I can't put on a gas cap correctly? It feels like it only goes on 1 way, feels secure and won't just pull off like the old one did. I've taken it off and put it back on 2-3 time in a row just to see if I could somehow screw it up. I dunno, feels like I'm doing it right.
Maybe I need to buy a 2 inch rubber stopper and use it instead of a high tech gas cap designed by GM.
The dealer didnt want to change my gas cap either when the first one went bad.
I went around and around with them and finally they relented due to the code that was showing.
Apparently, there is a newer gas cap (one with a rad seal) that is to be used. The service department guy says "well, ill be damned, there IS a problem with the gas caps..." after seeing it.
Maybe they replaced your old cap with another old cap. I dont have the part number for the one that they used on mine, BUT I do know that the original cap had a green seal and the new one (the one that works) has a red seal.
My cap has the green seal and have not had a problem but it is the strangest gas cap I have ever seen. I cannot tighten it and always feels like it is not on right.

I feel exactly the same way. I always have to figure the damned thing after putting gas. It is a source of stress and aggravation. I have no codes or pending codes, but my scanner gives me the yellow light and flashes EV (evaporative system). I always wondered if this is due to a faulty gas cap.
Anybody getting the flashing EV and yellow light with an OBD scanner?
Call Steve, he used his scanner on my 2006 the other day and said he was getting the same yellow light as on your car. I've never had a check engine light come on.
To PapaTango: Which code are you getting? Everyone assumes that you are getting the same code for the gas cap, but maybe you are now getting another code. Do you have a code reader? If not, go by Autozone and they'll scan it for free.
Hey Glennhl,
That's 3 now. Steve, you, and me who have the flashing EV and yellow light without codes. What's the deal? We would not pass emissions if we were to check today as the yellow light indicates there is still a test running and incomplete.

I had reset my ECM a few days before and have not put enough miles on it to complete the diagnostics tests. I think you have to drive at least 150 miles. I'll have Steve check it in a couple of weeks.
I'll check mine again in the morning since it has been awhile since I did. Last I check I had driven it for over 500 miles and the thing continued to show yellow. I will let you guys know.

Good idea. I am assuming that the current check engine light is being caused by the same situation as before since I had just filled up with gas and everything was OK up until then. Car is running fine, I just have that damn yellow symbol staring at me all the time.

I know how you feel, I also hate that yellow symbol! I like your user name. Let me guess, your father is a pilot and he called you that because of your first two initials? My Dad was a private pilot but luckily he never coined me with Golf Hotel. PapaTango sounds a lot better.

You are on course, sort of. PapaTango = P.T., my first two initials which also happens to be my nickname. I was "blessed" with a name that is actually 3 last names (Powell, Thomas, Parks). To avoid confusion when I was in the military I used "P.T." instead of my full name whenever possible. Too many items were being sent to PVT Powell instead of PVT Parks.
Do you own a Scanner? I'd want to know what the codes are before I go to the dealer. With the scanner I have I can read then clear the code(s). Then drive the car and if the same code reappears then at least you are armed when you go to the dealer. I bought a scanner knowing the C6 wouldn't let us view and clear codes like we could in the C5. I've used it 3 times to clear "stray" codes that have not reappeared. That saved me 3 trips to the dealer.
Plus after the warranty expires your trips to the dealer will start costing you $$$
