Default Big Power Little Cam

Last week I worked late finalizing a tune on a head, cam, header and a Cory special (LS2 Portworks) ported LS2 intake combination. Here are the results:

The cam is a LPE GT-11 with the following specs: 215/230 duration .631/.644 lift ground on a 118 LSA. This cam has a near stock idle quality so drivability is basically like stock. It sounds like a header only car, a total sleeper! As you can see I gained nearly 100hp with this combination. The heads are 243 LS6 castings with 2.05 intake valves and PRC gold springs. The porting is on the mild side but flow numbers indicate that they would equal other aftermarket heads easily at a considerably lower cost when compared to name brands such as ETP, RHS or AFR. The headers I used are American Racing headers that flow into a stock rear muffler section, CATs are used and supplied by ARH. I don't now how much Cory's ported LS2 intake added to the gains.

Also this car is a A6 car and the test was conducted in 3rd gear, the numbers are basically unchanged when tested in 4th gear. I was impressed with the numbers, and overall OE drivability. Just a few months earlier I dyno'd a 06 C6 Z06 that made 446 to the wheels as a baseline! This car now almost makes Z06 power output which I am are very pleased with. I beleive if this car had a Corsa or other aftermarket rear muffler section there could have been another 10hp to be had!

Those numbers are amazing Tom! What are the costs associated with those mods?

VERY interesting cam grind --- very modest intake duration, big split on the exhaust duration, very wide LSA. BIG lift!

I'm impressed!

Mr. Wong, you are my new HERO!

What great numbers with an A6. I assume the low intake duration allows you to use the stock converter. Did you have to bump the idle speed any? Also, that is a very steep lobe ramp with only 215 duration and .631 lift. How noisey is it? Does it sound like a sewing machine?.

Can we get a video of it at idle?

Sorry I don't have a video of it idling but here is a link to a video of the dyno run. I raised the idle speed slightly. It will idle at 650 RPM! And there is a little additional valve noise but it not really noticeable unless its with a trained ear. It literally sounds like a header only car, a total sleeper

How much for the package? I already have LG Pro long tubes, a Honker copy inlet, and a 160 stat. I need the heads, the cam, springs, push rods, and the ported intake. Did you also use a ported throttle body?

Thanks,
Glenn

Very nice numbers and interesting. I have been thinking about that type of duration for a while. What I want to know is, how are you getting these monster lift numbers without piston/valve interference? Seems you would have to fly cut the piston, or am I missing something here. Perhaps the wide LSA is the ticket?

Glenn, a ported TB was not used. Just the stock LS2. Tom will send you a quote for the package.

Yes, it is the wide LSA that is making it possible. This is a LPE GT11 camshaft, and all of the LPE cam line up can be installed without any flycutting of the pistons. I am not an advocate of having to cut the pistons, especially if the pistons have to be done in the car! Although I have not heard of any issues with having to cut them or problems after the operation. This is the very same cam that LPE uses in their 500BHP LS2 Corvette package. The package I did for Ray is basically the same as what they do, other than we didn't use their CNC heads or the LPE intake which in this case is a Callaway Honker which I know that LPE uses in many of their packages as well.

Tom,
How long do you think the Patriot Gold springs will be good for with that kind of lift? I know they are good to .650, but what kind of life will they have?

Thanks,
Glenn

Wow, this is a really impressive cam. It adds TQ right away and just keeps on going.

Is it possible to get the same duration, but with, say, .575 lift equivalent for those like me that already have 1.85 roller rockers?

Hey Tom,

Thanks to you and Jeff for modding my car...and working until the wee hours. I envy you for making a living with a hobbyist devotion. Pls convey my regards to racer Jeff. For interested parties, yes, there is a bit of valvetrain "Singer sewing machine" noise. But I expected that and it doesn't bother me. Best way to eliminate the noise is to goose the throttle pedal!! Love the muscle car sound eminating from the AR headers. And with the stock mufflers. Here is the link to my thread. Don't have a video of the idle, but believe me, it is essentially same as stock.
