Default Gear Questions

Have a bone stock '07 MN6 Z51. Was going to add cam/head, but am thinking I just may do gears when I add headers.

It is mainly a street car (not my DD), but will do the occassional track day. Want the car to be really quick.

Questions are: 1) Will changing gears add incremental mid-range pull which it currently lacks? 2) What do I give up doing gears?, and 3) Any suggestions on the ratio?

I know nothing about gears so any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

I'm surprised no one chimed in yet.

Go with 4.10's. The best mod I ever did on any of my cars. Some will say it's too much for the street, but it's fine. Pros are an increase in acceleration, easy to blow the tires away, makes the car more fun to drive. Negatives are that the gears become shorter so you have to shift a little more.

Gas mileage was unaffected.

PM me or give us a call if you have any other questions.

I don't have any experience with gear changes in my 07 C-6 A-6 paddleshift, because it seems like it is taking a little more time to come up with the right gear choice.

But, I did do the exact same thing you are thinking about with my C-5, and even tho performance gains might not be the same, the PRO's and CON's should be.

My C-5 MODS were: Breathless CAI, 160 STAT, headers, B&B PRT exhaust, 3.73 gears, Super Yank 3500 stall converter, reprogram computer, NO engine mods.

PRO's:

HUGE low end and midrange gain.
Can blow tires off at will.
Cut over full second off 1/4 mile time
Absolute blast to drive around town.

CON's:

Will lose top end speed
Lost 3 MPG (partly due to gears, and partly due to right foot)
Must be more cautious in rain
Increased cabin noise, due to higher engine RPM's

Gears are a great bolt in mod with absolute SOTP feel. Just do your research and choose the right gear ratio for what your needs are.

I don't plan on racing my new 07, we want to take more trips in it.
So my goals are to increase acceleration through gear change and computer tune eliminating torque mgm.

When you say "track day" do you mean Drag racing or Road racing??

If drag racing then YES gears.

if road racing then NO to gears. The 3.42 is for road racing, anything else detracts and slows you down as you shift too much.

SO headers and a darn good dyno tune is a good choice

Was thinking road racing - not dragging. So this would make a material difference for my application? Then maybe C/H would be best given what I want to do?

Absoulty. For road racing / DE / track days stay with the 3.42s. 4.10s will over heat your trans too fast, and not to mention shift too much. For drag racing 4.10s are a must, not realy for road racing / track days

No, not H/C but we suggest ppl start their modes with Contact patches. Not as sexy as HP modes, but a whole lot more safe and actully you will be faster.

Contact patches:

Brake Pads - change to race pads and back after the weekend. There are NO bake pads to run both street and track.Yes you can change your pads and drive to and from the event.
( Brake pads, in no order. Carbotech XP12 & XP10, PFC-01 or 03, Hawk DTC-60 or DTC-70s, Wilwood H )

DOT 4 brake fluid. Fresh with in 30 days of, or best one week of your track weekend
( Motul 600, ATE Superblue or Gold 600, Wilwood 600, Castrol SRF )

Tires - Tires will get worn out

Harness system and seat, to hold you in place.

Then just lots and lots of seat time to get better and faster.
after 4 - 6 weekends on the track then maybe more HP. but not before.

HOWEVER, if you have money buring a hole in your pocket, then LTs, high flow cats, X-pipe and exhuast, CAI and a darn great dyno tune.
