Do the KDW2s have different tread patterns on the fronts and rears? On the tire itself does it just say KDW or does it say KDW2? I ask because the ones that shipped have different tread patterns and say only KDW and not KDW2

Much thanks. The distributor is telling the local installer that there are supposed to be two different tread patterns. I left the car with the tire installer thinking there might be an error somewhere.
Maybe they are confusing the BFG KD and the KDW which are two totally different tires. The KD's largest diameter is 18 inch so it would fit the front but does not come in a 19 inch so you can't get them for the rear. So you may have KD fronts and KDW rears. KDW's are all the same tread pattern no matter what size they are.
There are two KDW's. The original has a standard type tread, the KLDW-2 has a "flame" pattern tread, most people I've talked to are buying the KDW2's, not the plain KDW.

You are wrong. There is no such thing as a KDW2. What everyone is buying is a KDW. See the sticker. See the tire. The standard type tread is a KD tire.

I"ve noticed also that they have dropped the "II" from the name - that is what they used to be called.
I agree with the above responses. I've got them, and they all look the same. The original KD's were considered fantastic dry tires ("Killer Dry" was their nickname) but not so good in the wet.

I emailed BFG on this last fall, their response was that the original KDW's were being replaced by the new tread design. Tire Rack at the time was calling them KDW-2's and calling the original just KDW's. Discount tire refers to them as 2nd generation KDW. The originator of this thread obviously got 2 old design and 2 new design (KDW-2?) tires.
From Tire Rack: "The BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW-2 (KDW for Key feature: Dry and Wet traction, the “2” is our addition and identifies that this is the second generation g-Force T/A KDW)"
Tire Rack can call it whatever they want. BFG calls it a KDW. Period.
Maybe the confusion comes from this;
"Choice of two great-looking tread patterns, sweet sidewall styling–customized to meet the preferences of all UHP consumers"
That quote is from BFGoodrich, so to answer the original question, it appears there are two tread patterns and maybe that is why they are called (2) by the Tire Rack. Period.
Details, details. Go to the BFG site and try to find another tread pattern for the KDW designated tire. There are none. When they say available in two tread patterns I think they are referring to the KDWS which is their "all season" version of the KDW. I'm not sure when BFG changed to the "2nd Gen" KDW but as far back as Sep 2005 the 2nd gen was available at Tire Rack because I have a print out of the specs from then.
Lol, you guys are getting way too worked up over this. Bottom line is, I think we've established that there was a "KD" tire that no longer is made and that the KDW tire has changed its tread pattern to something "flame like" here recently, maybe within the last year or so. Tire companies may or may not have been calling the new tread tires "2s" to distinguish between the first run tread and what is on them now.
For the record I had, apparently incorrectly, been calling them KDW2s as well.
I don't think anyone is worked up. For your info, the KD is still in production and is a better handling tire than the KDW in the dry. Unfortunately it doesn't come in a 19 inch version.
Ah, I stand corrected. I always thought the KDs were discontinued but I must have been thinking that cause I can't get them for the C6. And, yes the KD works better than the KDW dry. Agreed.
