If one put a Honker on a stock motor, would they feel anything SOTP? Increased throttle response?? Anything. Would things be different if one added headers to the mix? IOW is the stock air box that bad?

yes, you will feel the difference. the stock box isn't that bad, it is just it is pulling in hot engine compartment air vs outside by the ac condensor much cooler air for the honker. pcm cuts timing for iat above 86*.
I already had headers and 1.8 rockers before I added the Honker so I can't really answer the question. However, I could definitely feel the difference when I added the Honker.
I have the Xcelerator (Honker copy). Judging by my corrected trap speeds (averaging 6 before and 6 after) it looks like I picked up .8 mph or around 8 hp as compared to the K&N inlet I had before.
The big difference is around town. CBRF is right, around town you pick up warm under hood air with the stock inlet (or my old K&N inlet). My .8 mph pickup at the strip is the min you will get because at the drag strip I always cool down between runs so the under hood temps are not as high as driving around town.
There is a free mod where you pull down the radiator shroud to let in cold air to the air filter area. However, this still mixes with some warmer air but it's definitely an improvement. Even though I only picked up 8 hp (and that is hard to feel), I'm betting around town this is closer to 15 hp.
