Im intrested in running at Bonneville this coming year and am trying to gauge exactly what I need or what too expect.
What is the reasonable speed that at stock c6 z51 can obtain on the flats?
I plan to be in the 400rwhp range at the time of the run... should 150mph be relatively easy?...should I try something faster I am already comfortable at 150+ mph on tarmac. If the car is more then capable, I can start spending on the needed safety equipment. The 150+ club run gives you 2 miles or room.
How damaging is this salt for your car and is it worth trailering it in?

I'm going to Bonneville for the first time this summer. A buddy and I have always wanted to see the event, but we decided to enter a car instead. I helped him build a 1970 BMW 2002 for Vintage sports car racing and the car won a national class championship a couple of years ago. Both of us are retired from racing, but we thought it would be cool to use the car one last time. Our class, G/PRO, has a record of 137mph and we think the 2002 will never get that fast due to aerodynamics of a barn door, but I did some research and found out no one has ever run a BMW 2002 for top speed, so one of us will become the world's fastest BMW 2002. Another friend who writes for BMW magazines is going to document our trip for an article. I think that will be fun, too.
Back to your questions, you need to join at... http://www.scta-bni.org/Bonneville/Bonn_main.html
There is a rule book and class breakouts on their horrible web page. Other than safety rules (driveshaft hoops and clutch blankets) most of the info is pretty normal.
Something you won't need on a C6 (it has an enclosed driveline) You may however need seat harness, fire ext and "maybe" roll bar/cage.... (I don't have a rule book but speed is an issue with the bar requirement) Will absolutely need a proper helmet and clothing. Possibly electrical shutoff and marking showing how to open the door in emergency from outside.

yeah good points about opening the door.. hopefully a new vette isnt gonna be bursting into flames when I hit a highspeed. It sounds like for the 150mph run, which is done in two miles I just need the safety gear itself... I could always pick up the pfadt cage if needed.. thats what they were running in the cars the during the DC salt flats run. I have mudlaps on the car... hopefully they will prevent my paint from getting destroyed.
I thought you had to set a class record to "join the club." I recall reading in a recent issue of HotRod that to become a member in the 200mph Club you needed to average over 200mph between runs and also needed to break a record.
well im talking about the 150mph club.. its open to anyone, just pass the tech inspection and you need to clock 150mph on two runs within 2 miles...I know this stuff is really squirelly.. but isnt that 150mph pretty damn easy even for a stock vette?.. now the 200mph club would be intresting!.. but you would need about 600whp right?
150 mph...yes that would be a very easy mark to reach. Heck, stock the Vette should hit 185!
The salt has a lot of drag. I can't find the link, but there was a guy from Arizona that took a modified C5 Z06 and in the article it stated how much more drag you get on salt. It stated that a car that runs 186 on pavement will run probably 170 on the salt.

Yeah I was guessing that 15mph below top speed on asphalt.. also I have heard traction is a major issue at 150mph.. then the car settles..so the 150mph must be completed in 2 miles... are you sure thats easy for the stock vette? Not sure If you would need more room or not.
above 200mph things get crazy on the salt.. you need to deal with spray drag... the intense dust trail that is coming off your car exactly increase drag!... similiar to drag boats.
You have not been to a ORR, we have our share of anarchy. At one event the car show is at a "working girls house" with the employee's as the judges. From what I have seen they are bribable. Then there is the Friday night party with the 5hp race fueled blender making the Oh So good margaritas. In fact we call ourselves a large disfunctional family. Since no prize money (like the salt) everyone helps each other and it is all friendly compitition. If you looked at the site we have to keep up apperances for the first time public. But the real action is quite crazy.
