Default Oil weight Question...

Getting ready for my first oil change. I live in Phoenix and the summer temperatures easily top 110 daily. My question is can you use 10-30 Mobil 1 versus 5-30 Mobil 1. Not being an oil wizard it seems the 10-30 might be better at those daily temperatures, especially stuck in traffic. Any input is appreciated.

The first number is the cold viscosity the second is the hot viscosity. Use what GM recommends

Not sure if it's in your owner's manual at the back, but there could be alternative viscosities that you can use, under certain conditions. If not, use what the mfr. says to use, per above post.

Why do you want to use something different? Just follow the manual's recommendation of 5W30.

At 110° the 5w-30 and 10w-30 are the same 30 weight oil. Use the 5w-30 just like chevy recommends.

Bask in the olden daze, 5W-30 broke down faster than 10w-30 so 10w030 was better for high temperatures and hard usage.

Modern synthetics like Mobil 1 no longer have that problem so there is no reason to not use 5W-30 in your climate.

M1 10W-30 would do no harm in your climate, but 10W-30 no longer offers any advantages over 5W-30.
