not sure if this has been posted or not, i am going down to he local track this weekend, decided to check my lug nuts are still at 100lb ft for safty reason. while i was there discovered both of my axle nuts were less then 40lb ft. factory service manual calls for 118lb ft. you will need 34 mm socket, autozone has it for around $15.

Do we have axle nuts on both the front and back wheels. Too lazy to go out and look!
Took my wheels off for the first time to look around and checked those nuts, tight as a drum, no issue. It's surprising how quickly (under 2000km on my car) the corrosion sets in on the iron hubs and on anything that is rust prone.
This was posted in the C6 awhile ago and also the C6 Z06 section. I did check back then and they were loose. This seems to be a common problem..... This post is a great reminder for all
Mark them relative to the spindle with a black magic marker. If the mark didnt walk and they are loose, the spindle is stretched and the axle will eventually fail. I broke 2 axles at the hub spindle after tightening them. I was bashed last time I posted that but to each his own. If they stretched and you retighten it will continue to loosen until it breaks. The current axles on my car that arent loosening or stretching is with locktite with 100ft lbs. No issues anymore. Yes I have more power than most but one break was at 11mph in a parking lot.
Again the breaks are at the spindle touching the hub and not the joint as posted on with Z06's at the joint. I also switched to C5 axles which are stronger than all the Z06 upgrades.

yeah, i know, some people are double nutting to solve this issue. i just wanted to update it since it has been 4 months / 4k miles later.

yeah spin, i marked them too, it didn't walk and didn't get loose either. i just didn't want to double nut them if not required. why in the hell would someone bashed you for posting that you broke 2 axles, you are one of more techie around here.

Spin,
Sorry, I may have done the bashing, but it wasn't on purpose. It's just that 118 ft lbs on a thread that size is not a lot. If they are yielding then GM has used some bubble gum material instead of a good hardened steel. But I do like your idea, you are absolutely correct. If the marks have not moved and they are loose, then something has yielded and you will break it by retorqueing it a lot.

oh man, i didn't know you were the muscle man behind this bashing. sorry, i wasn't calling you out.

I don't think is was a "bashing" just pointing out that the stresses are not very high with just 118 foot pounds of torque on that large of nut.
I just wanted to apologize if Spin felt that I bashed him because Spin is one of my favorite people on this forum. He is extremely smart and always has some great information.

Bashing was the wrong word and no offense. I was 120 miles from home and Aitqik who lived near there took the axle off his car to get me home after I towed to his house.
Too much love around here these days.
You simply didnt give credit to my very real experience. The post was so biblical having been 2 days after I snapped the second one. I was about to stick my finger in my eye to pay the gods not to screw me on this again. I have been driving around with a spare axle and all necessary tools in case it broke a 3rd time. The last fix with Cartek's input was to not get silly with the tightening. The point here is the car will run fine with the nut removed since the axle cant get out. It may make some noise but that is better than it snapping in 2 at 70mph and swinging around, causing a 10 car pile-up. 40 foot pounds is afe and will not make noise. The axle cant come out even with the nut off.

I will take spins knowledge on this one... I was wondering if my rear tire was going to fly off at 160mph this past weekend..
